Description:
Melbourne & Sydney: Tatchell, Garritty & Dobson, 1892. First Edition. Walter Withers, Ernest Ferris, Fred Kneebone, and John Clemens. A celebration of the Australian Christmas with illustrations by one of the founding members of the Heidelberg School, Walter Withers. Issued as a souvenir by the Post and Telegraph Departments, this charming work includes many portraits of the government officers, together with depictions of their offices ranging from the Sydney General Post Office to the Alice Springs Telegraph Station. It is further illustrated by many 'picture postcard' views of Australian and New Zealand cities and landscapes. This is the only recorded publication by the artists, Fred Kneebone and Ernest Ferris, but all three artists have almost equal shares in the production. Walter Withers first arrived in Melbourne in 1883 but did not settle there until 1888, opening his Melbourne studio in 1891. Produced when Australia began to suffer deeply from the depression of the 1890s, the artists would…

Description:
Berlin and Frankfurt, 1930. Only individual sections of this item in the German National Library in Leipzig can be traced by us (dated there "1938?"). It is a quite superb catalogue from the company founded in Bockenheim near Frankfurt in 1878. The headquarters were relocated to Berlin in 1928. The fact that Berlin is placed in front on the title-page perhaps thus suggests the 'thirties, as does the typography and layout. Kabel was a display type of the late twenties however (Klingspor, 1927), so the GNL date seems too late. The printed leaves have repeated motifs (by A. Brinder? Goovaerts, GIP) in different colours and on different papers. In addition to coloured and black offset printing, the book displays special inks such as poster colours, gloss and opaque. Octavo, bound in paper-covered canvas boards, titled in blue, red, black and green in 'Kabel-style', canvas back with screws, 21 cm x 14 cm, 224 leaves + text, with 224 leaves, each with a colour sample (partly in multi-colour printing, also…

Description:
London: Frederick Warne & Co, 1908. First Edition. DULAC, Edmond. Alphabet book of rhymes brilliantly illustrated and conceived by the artist and master illustrator of the golden age of book illustration, Edmund Dulac (1882 - 1953). E was an exquisite elf Who enjoyed being quite by herself, She delighted to play In a elegant way With the things that she found on a shelf. K was a kind-hearted King Who once taught a bird how to sing, By knocking a pan With the knob of a fan, And a kettle tied onto a string. U was a youthful Undine In the kingdom of ultramarine. Often week after week She would play hide and seek, In the weeds with an ugly sardine. Born in the French city of Toulouse, Edmund Dulac rose to prominence shortly after moving to London when he was twenty two. Dulac's first commission was to illustrate the classic gothic English novel, Jane Eyre, originally written by Charlottle Bronte in 1847. The assignment heralded the beginning of a major deal with J.M. Dent's London publishing house…
