1877 Charles Darwin Descent of Man Evolution Natural History Monkeys Science "it is those who know little, not those who know much, who so positively assert that this or that problem will never be solved by science." ― Charles Darwin, The Descent of Man A very rare edition of Charles Darwin's 'Descent of Man.' This is the work in which Darwin's theories of evolution by means of natural selection were realized. Before this book, Darwin applied his thoughts to animals and plants but had not yet decided they also could be realized in Homo sapiens. In fact, the world 'evolution' had not appeared in any Darwinian work prior to 'Descent of Man.' Many of Darwin's theories that were prevalent in 'Descent' have been misconstrued and misinterpreted – most notably that humans descended from apes. Darwin never said humans came from apes or monkeys. Darwin's said that "human ancestors, if alive today, would have to be classified among the Primates." (De Beer). 1846 1st ed Charles Darwin EVOLUTION Voyage of HMS Beagle Geology Fossils "One general law, leading to the advancement of all organic beings, namely, multiply, vary, let the strongest live and the weakest die." ― Charles Darwin, The Origin of Species During the 19th-century, few scientists and biologists had as significant and long-lasting impact on scientific discovery as Charles Darwin. His contributions to the science of evolution with natural selection, survival of the fittest, and biological explanation have cemented him as a cornerstone in the world of biology and natural science. From 1831 to 1836, Charles Darwin was a part of the second voyage of the HMS Beagle, a voyage that sought natural science treasures and geological finds. While on the voyage, Darwin kept a journal which would later become published as 'The Voyage of the Beagle'. He explored the South American land, making theories, finding fossils of extinct animals, and made detailed observations of plants and animals. This voyage, and ... Read more

1685 Meditations of Rene Descartes Philosophy Metaphysics Existence of God Latin "It is not enough to have a good mind; the main thing is to use it well." – René Descartes René Descartes was a 17th-century French philosopher whose theories and discoveries spawned an influx of commentary and responsive writings from western philosophers. He wrote numerous studies on a variety of topics including meteorology, physics, dioptric, mechanics, and even music – all of which were collected in his work 'Discourse on the Method'. According to the 'Printing and the Mind of Man', "It is no exaggeration to say that Descartes was the first of modern philosophers and one of the first modern scientists; in both branches of learning his influence has been vast The revolution he caused can be most easily found in his reassertion of the principle (lost in the Middle Ages) that knowledge, if it is to have any value, must be intelligence and not erudition. 1825 Dictys of Crete Dares Phrygius Greek Mythology Trojan War Septimi Delphini Dictys Cretensis, author of a pseudo-chronicle of the Trojan War, was supposed to have accompanied the Cretan leader Idomeneus from Knossos to the siege of Troy and to have written a pro-Greek account of the Trojan War. His manuscript was said to have been "discovered" during the 1st century AD and, by command of the Roman emperor Nero, to have been transliterated from Phoenician into Greek. Probably in the 4th century, Septimius put out a translation of Dictys's supposed eyewitness account, and this fantastic work, the Ephemeris belli Trojani, together with a similar but pro-Trojan account by Dares Phrygius, was a major sourcebook for medieval handlings of the Trojan story. This edition is the collected works of Dictys Cretensis including Dares' work from the series 'Scriptores latini in usum Delphini.'
