Description:
Faber and Faber, Nov 2000. New edition. Paperback. I bought this book to read if I got really bored on holiday. In the end the holiday had to be worked round the book as it refused to be put down. A departure from P D James' more usual "detective novel", this story seems closer to the Ruth Rendell-as-Barbara Vine physcological thriller. The plot is centred on a past murder and its drastic reprocussions for two very different people caught up in its wake.\nThe novel is beautifully written with vivid descriptions of people and places and enough sense of impending disaster to keep you reading. I particulary liked the way in which one character's plans to commit a violent act of revenge were described in a completely deadpan way as if he was planning something as harmless as his annual holiday. This technique simply made the story all the more disturbing.\nGripping stuff!

Description:
Penguin Books Ltd, Nov 1990. New edition. Paperback. This is a very good book, extremely well-written, as is always the case with PD James. The prose is elegant, flowing and eminently readable. Featuring Adam Dalgliesh, this novel is set in Larksoken in Norfolk, focussing on the lives of a small village community living in the shadow of a nuclear power station. In the wake of a serial killer, a body is found, but it is soon established that another killer is at work, and it's someone in the local community. James explores issues of community life and relationships - in particular the reactions of local people to the power station, and the workers - love, betrayal, and the intricacies of the relationship between two siblings. Along the way we come across a nuclear protest organiser, a down-trodden artist and single parent, struggling with 4 children, and several other minor characters, who all have a significant part to play.\nI really enjoyed reading this novel, though only gave it 4 stars as I… Read more

Description:
Faber and Faber, Oct 2005. Export Ed. Paperback. While PD James’ "The Lighthouse" moves satisfyingly in territory that the author has made very much her own -- the classic English crime mystery -- there are several new elements added, proving that Baroness James is not content to rest on her laurels. While Commander Adam Dalgliesh is once again at work, solving a case of murder in a secluded setting, cut off from the rest of the world (James has long been pleased to introduce variations into the beloved crime situations that exercised her predecessors), and while the structure of the novel presents the reader with the usual strongly drawn cast of suspects and victims, there is a new frankness here, with the treatment of sexuality more upfront than would ever have been countenanced in the era of Dorothy Sayers and co. But long-time readers of this most accomplished of British novelists will also be pleased to learn that the things we turn to James for are all satisfyingly in place. \n A secluded… Read more

Description:
Faber, Jul 2003. Paperback. Adam Dalgliesh is called in to investigate the murder of one of the trustees of the Dupayne Museum. \nThis is one of PD James' most enjoyable books, because the characterisation is so good. Time (and pages!) are taken to set the scene and introduce the characters. It is time well spent as the characters are easily distinguishable, believable and sympathetically written. The plot is that of a typical British who dunnit. It is easy to read, but what sets this book apart from the standard crime novel is the quality of the writing, which was superb. A book not to be missed by anyone enjoying good British crime fiction.

Description:
Penguin Books Ltd, Oct 1989. Penguin 1989. Hardcover. P.D.James shines here with this novel which contains everything needed in a murder mystery. \nGripping from start to finish, this novel sees Dalgliesh caught up in an investigation which has turned personal - he knew the victim. There are many twists and turns here as they try to unravel the clues and evidence to point them to a ruthless and sadistic killer. There are many sub-plots in the novel which try to lead you astray, but ultimately it comes down to one ruthless murderer. Kate Miskin features heavily in this story and a great part of the novel involves her personal life which we have not seen until now. \nA truly thrilling cerebral mystery, which delivers the goods intelligently and VERY Englishly! One of my personal favourites which I read again and again.

Description:
Penguin Books Ltd, Oct 1989. New edition. Mass Market Paperback. Unnatural Causes is early Adam Dalgleish. He's still coping with his reluctance to become emotionally intimate and uses a holiday to visit his Aunt Jane as an opportunity to think things over. Will he ask Deborah Riscoe to marry him . . . or not?\nNaturally, as soon as he arrives there's a mysterious disappearance followed by all kinds of bizarre events. When the mystery turns into apparent crime, Dalgleish becomes concerned for his aunt who doesn't have an alibi. A.D. is also on the outside looking in as the local CID led by Inspector Reckless seems to resent Dalgleish's presence.\nThe whole circumstance is made ore bizarre by the presence of many literary types in what increasingly seems to be a literary mystery written about in a mystery. There's a fascinating story within the story element that gets the book off to a strong start.\nBut as Dalgleish unravels the ultimate mystery, the book also comes unraveled. You get a lengthy… Read more

Description:
Ace Books, Dec 1998. Paperback. A readable, thought provoking series of stories on the theme of nanotechnology. Eight short stories, one poem and a novella. No bad stories and one truely great one.\nI liked this book a lot. I had only read one of the stories before in a magazine anthology. The others were new to me.\nThe highlight of the book is "We were out of our minds with joy" by David Marusek. This story has enough in the way of ideas and development potential to spawn a novel. The price is worth paying for this novella alone. Indeed, at the price, it seems like a bargain!\nWhile Marusek is still an emerging talent, other authors featured here such as Bear, Egan, di Fillipo and Baxter will be more familiar.\nAt the end of the book, the editors add a list of further reading on the same subject. I will be following up a number of their suggestions.

Description:
Time Warner Paperbacks, Feb 1999. New edition. Paperback. Book Review: The Dreamland Chronicles - the strange and continuing saga of Area 51 \r\n\r\nThe Dreamland Chronicles is a study of the whole Area 51 phenomenon from the stance of the author David Darlington, a somewhat wry and talented journalistic observer. Darlington predictably covers the military history of the top secret Nevada military area, and then launches into a personal quest - he hangs out with the Rachel, Nevada set to watch tortured and hostile male egos manipulate each other and the media for every buck they can get.\r\n\r\nFew of the whacko UFO set emerge with any credibility, including Nevada politicians who hop on the media-squeezing 'Independence Day' launch fracas. Along the way, almost everyone who touches the Area 51 story comes away with their minds infected, their hackles raised and a need for egotistical opinionated vengeance, be that against other equally nerdy conspiratorialists, the 'Gubbermint' or fellow… Read more

O'Reilly Media, Inc, USA, Jul 2001. Paperback. I find this a good "cook book" -the sort you need in a rush, to remind you the details. Although some items were rather too-commonly used to include in a reference (eg: "Q:You need to sleep for a while; A: use Thread.sleep()"), in general the tips were very useful.\nI would recommend this for the novices and the experienced alike, to help free your mind with the details of Java coding intricacies, and let you worry about more important design /testing aspects. Personally I found this very useful in graphics and internationalization, the things that I do not use everyday work.

Description:
Penguin, Oct 2002. Paperback. This book contains a huge volume of information about ancient Egypt, and I am assuming that this is the reason that other reviewers have awarded five stars. I would estimate that less than half of the information is in any way relevant to the topic of religion and magic, however. Instead of being a discussion of religion and magic, the book attempts to provide a sweeping history of the entire span of ancient Egyptian civilization. Unfortunately, this history is presented as an endless succession of often unrelated facts with no attempt to draw out interesting patterns and relationships and scant attempt at analysis and explanation. The lack of connection and analysis makes the writing at times almost incoherent. The style of writing can be seen in the following extract from the beginning of a paragraph `Although weak or foreign dynasties tried to revive the myth of the god-king in order to support their own royal status, the political power of the king continued to… Read more
