Description:
Rouseville, Venango County, PA, [1870]. Illustrated broadside, 11" x 7.5". One word inscribed on verso. CONDITION: Good, staining, chipping at margins, partial separation at middle old folds, one puncture at middle. A broadside issued during the Pennsylvania oil rush by a Rouseville, Pennsylvania inventor advertising a flue scraper and wiper designed to address an inefficiency in boiler used in the oil fields. This broadside relates that $10,000 was lost by the owners of steam boilers and engines in the oil regions during 1870 by burning fuel to make steam in boilers, the flues of which were seldom if ever cleaned. While this may seem a large estimate, it is noted that if any one experiments upon it a little, they will soon be convinced that is a fact. The broadside goes on to note that, with all the soot and scale removed from its glues, a boiler will make the same amount of steam, with between 10 to 20 per cent less fuel than when not properly cleaned. Thus all users of boilers should get a glue… Read More

Bookplate of Wyman Parker at lower left corner of front paste-down. CONDITION: Very good, corners slightly bumped. Nonesuch Press edition of this work first published in 1686, first translated into English by John Glanvill in 1688. Declaring to those aware of recent developements in Natural Philosophy that he does "not pretend to instruct, but only to divert them by presenting...in a gay and pleasing dress, that which they already know," Fontenelle's A Plurality of Worlds is a classic of popular-scientific writing from the Age of Reason. First published forty-five years after Descartes' Meditations on First Philosophy and a century after the Copernican revolution, this dialogue not only explains the Cartesian dualism of mind and body with respect to terrestrial and intergalactic bodies, but like Descartes before him, Fontenelle's writing… Read More

Aug. Vind. [Augsburg] : J.A. Pfeffel, [1719]. Oblong folio, half calf and original speckled brown paper over boards, recently re-backed, raised bands with gilt floral ornaments in seven compartments. 29 (of 30) leaves comprising 2 engraved titles and 27 plates; lacking typographic privilege leaf, as is often the case. Subsequent plates depict façades, squares, monuments, great houses, gardens, etc. These include "Der Schotten Platz," "Prospect des Wienerischen Neu-Marckts," "Die Furste Lichtenstainische Pallast," "Prospect eines Wienerischen Platzes der Hoff genannt," "Prospect des Hohen Marckts zu… Read More

London: Printed for T. Becket, the Corner of the Adelphi, in the Strand. MDCCLXXIV. 8vo, disbound. [4], 75, [1] pp., all leaves inlaid. First edition of this play set in a mythical ancient Egypt. Alexander Dow (d. 1779) spent much of his life serving in the British army in India. According to The Oxford Companion to English Literature in 1768 Dow "joined the fashion for Oriental Tales with Tales....of the Inatulla of Dehli, a series of flamboyant and ribald stories which met with some success. In the same year he published The History of Hindostan; two dramas, Zingis and Sethona followed in 1769 and 1774." The advertisement leaf in Sethona states that "Colonel Dow, when he sailed for India, left the following Tragedy in the possession of Mr. Garrick. The event has shewn, that the reputation of an absent author could not have been trusted in safer hands. He spared no expence as a manager, no pains as a man of taste...."
