Description:
Octavo 18.5x12.5 cm., wrappers, 136pp. 5000 copies. Unattributed constructivist cover design (The University of My Generation) Author David Markovich Khanin (1903-1937) was Soviet writer and critic and served on the board of Molodaia Gvardiia. At one point he headed the Department of Children and Youth Literature fo the RSFSR Publishing House. Research indicates he was known for his work on sexuality in the Revolution and its aftermath, and his alignment with Trotsky on many issues. As a result of his revelations of sexual mores and the Trotskyist leanings, he became a "nonperson" with his personal history erased from Soviet chronicles, and was shot in 1937 after being denounced and all of his publications were removed from bookstores and libraries. Two of his works are located by OCLC in North America, both of them only in microfiche; no other institutional holdings found worldwide. Tracing formation of Soviet power after the civil war through the eyes of a young Bolshevik. Here he mentions…

Description:
Octavo 17.2x13.2 cm., wrappers, 36 pp., edition of 2000 copies. Cover design by G. Chikhladze. Daisali (Ivane Sergos vua Babuadze, 1901-1937) was a Georgian nationalist poet who was the founder and leader of the Somnambulist group of modernist poets during the years of Georgian independence (1917-1922). Sometime after the Soviets assumed control of Georgia, the group was seen as having ties with the Mensheviks and was suppressed. He was arrested numerous times in the 1920s as a subversive for protesting state suppression, jailed in 1929 and exiled for three years to Arkhangelsk in Northern Russia. Either murdered or a suicide sometime up to 1937, he was rehabilitated in 1968 The remarkable cover art was done by Gregol Chikhladze, of which nothing is known; it's assumed among historians that this is a pseudonym. With the author's autograph. Rare, no worldcat holdings found.

Description:
Moscow-Leningrad: Ogiz-Izogiz, 1932 Octavo 17 x 17.5 cm., wrappers, 108(1) pp. The collection was compiled in 1930 by a student group examining the architecture of workers clubs at the State Academy of Art. Edited by David Efimovich Arkin (1899 1957), art historian, critic and historian of architecture, fine and industrial arts. Worker Clubs were viewed as an essential place to develop proletarian culture from the outset and over 7000 clubs were built in the first three decades of the USSR. Initially indistinguishable from the upper-class clubs of the pre-revolution, by 1925 they provided some of the most exciting design opportunities for social experiment and were a unique contribution in the history of Constructivist architecture, and the boldest experiments were realized. The most original are by Mel'nikov and Il'ia Golosov. Each building is accompanied by an essay from various authors (Alekseeva,M.A. Il'in, V.S.Kemenov, M.V. Alpatov, F/S. Roginskaia, A.V. Filippov, D.M. Aranovich, Natalia…

Description:
Paris: Editions Ars, 1936 Quarto 28.5 x23 cm., wrappers, 8 (iv) 23 plates, total edition of 415 plus the additional original lithograph (Self-Portrait, 1923) as called for issued in the first 115 copies. Lajos Tihanyi (1885-1938), one of the most important Hungarian modernist painters, was a deaf mute from a childhood illness. Despite his handicap and largely self-taught, he was recognized quite early on as a formidable talent and played an important role in the modernist (Nagybánya, Nyolcák) and avant-garde (Aktivizmus) movements up to his departure from Hungary in 1919. Living in Paris from 1922 he developed into nonobjective abstraction and was part of the Abstraction-creation group. At the same time he continued executing expressionist portraits of a wide international circle of friends and associates. These included Gyula Halász (Brassai), Ivan Goll, George Antheil, Hungarian émigrés and surrealist poet Robert Desnos who authored this book. Desnos gave the valedictory at Tihanyi's funeral,…

Description:
Octavo 18.5x13.5 cm., illustrated wrappers, 256pp. Liudas Dovydenas (1905-2000) was a prolific author who was widely published by 1936. Hunted by the Nazis and Soviets alike, he emigrated to the USA during WWII and edited Lithuanian émigré journals, eventually returning to Lithuania in 1998. The present work is his second, 'There Was a Man Without a Leg,' a melodramatic tale about the life of a provincial teacher. In this work there is already psychological and high moral message that characterize his later works. The cover design is by the artist Vytautas Kairiukštis (1890-1961), acknowledged as the most important artist of the Lithuanian avant-garde; he co-authored the first Constructivist manifesto with Wladiyslaw Strzeminski in Poland and was also a member of the Blok group in Warsaw. Description:
Budapest: Genius, 1929 Quarto 27x19.5 cm, wrappers, 30(2)pp. Tibor Déry was a novelist who aligned with Kassák's MA group in both Budapest and later Vienna, and lived peripatetically until settling in Hungary in 1935. Like Kassák, he was an outsider of leftist vision, eventually becoming a communist and suffering suppression under both fascist and communist régimes. He was imprisoned after the 1956 revolution. He is acknowledged as a 20th-century great writer winning praise from György Lukács as "The greatest depictor of human beings in our time." In this work, Déry creates a surrealist narrative of rebellion against society, the universe, and reality itself. A final statement in it declares, "The truth is a lie!" After this, Déry joined Kassak's Dokumentum group in Budapest and leaned toward constructivist and humanist work in the next decade, in line with the Munka vision. Cover design by Lajos Kassák. OCLC…
