Paris: P.G. Simon, 1757. First Edition. Unbound. Very good. 4to: 13, [1] pp. (final page blank). Original self-wrappers, stitched (some soiling). Top corner of the margins have a diagonal cut (no loss of text) perhaps to remove the "Arrest" from others that were fastened together, otherwise the edges are untrimmed. ADDED: Arrest de la cour de Parlement, contre la famille de Robert-Francois Damiens, Extrait des registres du Parlement. Du 29 Mars 1757. 4to: 3 pp. THE INFAMOUS DAMIENS TRIAL CHANGED THE CRIMINAL PUNISHMENT PROCESS IN CIVILIZED NATIONS WORLDWIDE. First printing of all the gruesome details of the trial and death sentence (by torture) on Robert-Francois Damiens for feebly attempting to assassinate Louis XV. The sentence mandated execution by means of torture that was so cruel, so ghastly, so horrible, and so sickening, that it merited immediate and justifiable outrage on an international scale, and even now continues to shock legal and sociological historians, notably Michel Fouchault,… Read more

Paris: A. du Brueil, 1611. Very Good. 12mo. [6], 268 (misnumbered), [2] leaves = 276 ff, COMPLETE. Bound in 19th century calf, covers panelled in blind with blind-stamped floral tool on corners, spine with two raised bands, title lettered in gilt with blind-stamped tooling above and below bands, usual wear and tear along hinges, slightly bumped corners, three small divots in edges of front cover, marbled endpapers, doublures gilt, evidence of cloth bookmark. Q10r. Armorial bookplate of I. G. Schorsch on front pastedown. A curious 17th-century printing blunder: as is true in the Wellcome Library copy, sig. Q is wrongly printed, resulting in the annoyance of an early English bibliographer who in our copy has written: "This finishing page to the 6th Matinee should have been printed on the opposite leaf, &… Read more

Vienna, 1842. First Edition. Very good. 8vo. (200 x 130 mm). 88 pp. + 1 folding letterpress table recording donations. Original blue printed wrappers. With a 14-page letter on German Catholic immigrants to Philadelphia, Pittsburgh, and provincial Pennsylvania. In this unassuming and almost completely unknown journal are many communications from Catholic missionaries to North America, including is a forgotten 25-page letter from Pierre Jean De Smet, S.J. , describing his first mission to the Flathead in western Montana. This marks the beginning of one of the longest-lived Catholic missions to Indians in the United States. The Flathead had petitioned the Church for years to send a "Blackrobe," and De Smet was received with enthusiasm. The present letter contains a good deal of information not published elsewhere. De Smet wrote this letter to his bishop, Rosati of St. Louis; it is different from the letter he wrote to the Jesuit Superior General Jan Roothan that was subequently published in the… Read more

Description:
Paris, 1790. First Edition. Hardcover. Very good. Dates: 1790-1794. Together 4 texts in one volume, bound for Comte de Hennezel d'Ormoy: early 20th-century half basane over marbled boards, spine gilt aux armes (see below). Legal judgments from the French Revolution, all first editions, all of great rarity. Includes the sentencing of Camille Desmoulins (1760-1794), a lawyer whose serious stammer (and violent temper) prompted him to turn away from the bar and towards politics on the eve of the French Revolution. On July 12, 1789, after Louis XVI had dismissed his popular minister of finance (Jacques Necker), and Desmoulins openly screamed his disappointment to the Parisians crownd gathered in the garden of the Palais Royal. This event made him famous in Paris as he was suddenly seen as a leader of the Revolution. Following Desmoulins, riots started throughout Paris. The mob, procuring arms by force on July 13, was partly organized as the Parisian militia, which was afterwards to be the National… Read more

Description:
Pittsburgh, 1952. Small 8vo. Six-ring notebook, dark brown roan covers (worn) divided by 5 tabs. Title + 35 leaves (text typed on rectos only). Preserved in a 4-flap lig-free case. Highly curious vernacular library catalogue of a Pittsburgh logger, being his private collection of books on lumber and forestry, thoughtfully arranged. The contents were typed on 35 separate leaves and inserted into a six-ring notebook. This is clearly Diebold's home-made catalogue of his own lumber library; for instance Diebold describes Capt. Barker's 1903 "Lake Forest As I Have Known Them" as being "autographed by the author." Diebold continues: "Autobiography of a lumberman and guide in Northern New England. Good technical descriptions of working logs through the lakes with booms." There are 26 DETAILED descriptions of logging books dating from 1851 to 1952; following is an index (short titles) consisting of 9 leaves arranged into categories: Forestry, Anecdotes, Technical, and History. Description:
St. Petersburg, Florida, 1960. Advertising card, 23 x 15 cm., printed on both sides on stiff card stock, stapled to a flat wooden stick, allowing for its use as a fan. Recto shows four black & white photo illustrations of two little boys, one African-American, one white, making use of the pectoral plaster. Each photo illustration has a caption title: "Put the Plaster over the Pain;" "Cures lames back;" "Prevents Pneumonia;" "Takes the Ache." The white child places the plaster on the African-American child's back, on his chest, and on his abdomen. In the last photo, the African American child is eating a large slice of watermelon. One additional smaller photo at the base of the card shows the boys side by side. On the verso is the text of an ad for a Florida druggist: Webb City Drug Store, St. Petersburg, FLA., Owner "Doc" J.E. Webb. Claims for the pectoral plaster are repeated, presumably ironically, and in bold letters the racist statement: "It Will Not Make Black White." "Fanning" the flames of… Read more
