Johannes David (1545-1613) was principal of Jesuit schools at Courtrai and Ghent. The fine illustrations are by Theodoor Galle (1571-1633), from a renowned Antwerp family of engravers, who was closely associated to the Plantin Press. The work offers a systematic bibliography divided into three historical periods, and a detailed survey of the literature of all disciplines, theology, law, philosophy, medicine, mathematics, history, and philology with their subdivisions. Nice set of Dibdin's (1776-1847) first published work of importance, which, when published in 1802, brought him to the attention of Lord Spencer, his lifelong patron. The present, definitive edition is entirely rewritten, and contains for the first time an account of the best editions of the Hebrew Bibles and of the Greek and Latin Fathers. Dibdin remains best known for his "Bibliotheca Spenceriana" (1814-15) and the Roxburghe Club of which he was the originator and vice-president. Dithmar (1677-1737) was professor of law in Frankfurt/Oder, and historian. He had the function of a counsellor in the Order of St. John of Jerusalem, which was founded in 1099. In 1726, he published a revised and enlarged edition of Beckmann's "Beschreibung des ritterlichen Johanniter-Orden", and wrote a history of the order in 1728; the present "Nachricht" is his final work on the subject.
