Description:
London: John Murray, 1871. First edition, first printing. Quarter leather. This is the first edition, first impression of Charles DarwinÂ’s The Descent of Man and Selection in Relation to Sex – his first book to apply the term “evolution” - in a striking contemporary fine binding. The binding features quarter calf over marbled paper-covered boards, with blind tooled transitions between the boards and calf corners and spine. The spine features raised, gilt-decorated bands framed by double gilt rules, a black title panel, and gilt devices adorning undecorated compartments. The boards, endpapers, and page edges are all marbled in a matching nonpareil combed pattern, creating a compelling aesthetic consistency. First impression of the first edition is confirmed by issue points; in Volume I, “transmitted” is the first word on p.297; Volume II has errata on the title page verso (seventeen errata for Volume I and eight for Volume II) and a tipped-in “Postscript” at unpaginated pp. ix-x referring… Read More

Description:
Aldershot, Gale & Polden Ltd., 1959. First edition. Hardcover. This scarce book is a unit history of the Queen's Own 4th Hussars, particularly notable for a foreword and contributions by Winston S. Churchill. The 4th Hussars was at Aldershot in 1895 when Lieutenant Winston Churchill joined it from Sandhurst as the junior subaltern. The 4th Hussars would experience much of its most conspicuous glory during Churchill's long life and then would cease to be in the twilight of Churchill's life, just a few years after the end of Churchill's second premiership. Not surprisingly, Churchill contributions to this book are ubiquitous and prominent. Churchill contributes a Foreword dated September 1957, with facsimile signature. There are also numerous lengthy excerpts from Churchill works, including My Early Life, The World Crisis, and The Second World War. Of bibliographic note is Churchill's address of 1 February 1943, which here appears in a version somewhat different from those published in Onwards to… Read More

Description:
Amsterdam: Adriaan Wor, en de Erve G. Onder de Linden, 1746. 1st Edition. Hardcover. Jan de Marre (1696-1763) was a commander of a Dutch East India Company ship. He first joined the company at the age of 13, and achieved the rank of commander in 1728. He retired from the Company in 1732, and moved on to a career of writing and of directing a theatre company, among other interests. This volume, in Dutch, remains in an intact original binding in good plus condition with near fine contents. The half leather binding features decorative gilt spine bands and leather corners over speckled paper boards with red-speckled page edges. The binding is sound and square with wear at the corners, abrasions to the rear board, and overall wear and some cracking to the spine. The contents are bright and surprisingly clean, with very mild toning and occasional light spotting confined to the page edges. There are two engraved title vignettes and one engraved portrait of the author. All in all an extremely nice copy… Read More

Description:
New York, 1928. Telegram. This striking piece of ephemera captures a pivotal moment of twentieth century political history and the singular working relationship between the man who would become AmericaÂ’s longest-serving president and the woman who would serve as his de facto chief of staff. This is a 6 November 1928 telegram from Franklin Delano Roosevelt (1882-1945) to Marguerite Alice “Missy” Lehand (1894-1944). Print in six lines reads: “DZ NEW YORK N Y 1011 PM NOV 6TH L829 | MMISS [sic] M A LEHAND | WARM SPRINGS GA. | GOVE SMITH AND I BOTH RUNNING VERY CLOSE IN THE STATE | FRANKLIN D ROOSEVELT. | 9- 17 PM”. The telegram is printed on 8 x 6.5 inch (20.3 x 16.5 cm) “WESTERN UNION TELEGRAM” stationery. The dark purple type remains distinct, if slightly variable in ink. The paper is inevitably toned but nearly complete, with fractional closed tears along the left edge, a tiny stain along the lower right edge, a single horizontal crease, and a single vertical crease. The telegram is protected… Read More
