Description:
London : James Macmillan, [1948]. First edition. A tale of murder and counterfeit at an English country house, which works well enough as a comedy of manners between tough crime reporter Mike Manstone, Inspector Clarke of the Yard ("Hack" and "Sleuth" to each other), and Manstone's long-suffering girlfriend Jane. As a murder mystery it ranks nowhere. The cover artist was evidently not paid well enough to read the book (or perhaps paid more to ignore it) - the woman with the gun should be wearing a "concealing hood" and "a great shapeless garment" at the time. Post 8vo (20cm). 96pp. Original stapled stiff card wrappers; acid-free tape repair and strengthening to spine beneath the dust-jacket; staples rusted and discoloured; a few spots, but a good copy in the attached dust-jacket - busty brunette, smoking gun, etc. - the jacket a little rubbed, worn, and discoloured by staples on lower wrapper. Just two copies (Bodleian and British Library) located in major libraries worldwide.

London : for Sherwood, Neely & Jones, 1821. First edition : the second issue, with the footnote on p.9. Pierce Egan's roaring and runaway success - racy, slangy, and riotous adventures among the highest of high life and the lowest of low life in Regency London - "In his particular line, he was the greatest man in England" (John Camden Hotten). The sparkling text which took the country by storm as it appeared in instalments between August 1820 and July 1821 is gloriously accompanied by the superb aquatints of the brothers Isaac Robert and George Cruikshank, many depicting recognisable London scenes. Demy 8vo (216 x 139mm). xvi,376pp. Frontispiece and thirty-five Cruikshank plates, all with original hand colour. Three folding leaves of music. Woodcut illustrations in text. Bound, without half-title and advertisements, in an elegant later (mid twentieth-century) full crimson morocco, banded and gilt, by Bayntun-Riviere; all edges gilt; gilt turn-ins; marbled endpapers; a few minor marks and spots; two… Read More
