A very rare title, printed by Spottiswoode, bound in the original brown cloth with black borders and gilt lettering, but suffering from having been in 'Rice's Library' (blue sticker to the front board) where the spine has been repaired rather crudely with black tape, board edges rubbed, corners bumped and fraying, hinges cracked but still quite firmly attached, brown endpapers, stock number to front pastedown, page edges dusty and browned, strain to stitching internally with varying degrees of foxing to pages, but text complete and legible. 232 pages. Notes in pencil and pen to half-title, relating the former owner's family connections to Dr Rigby and his daughter; similar notes in pencil to title page. Unique eye-witness account of France on the eve of the Revolution of 1789.. First Edition. Hardcover. Acceptable.

British Bloodhound Mystery No. 256, slight wear to cover, including two small bumps to board edges, some browning to edges, but internally very clean, dust-wrapper has chips, marks and creases, with some rubbing in places, and small loss with jagged tear to bottom of spine, but the fine cover illustration of a night car chase on a deserted country road is largely unaffected. First UK Edition. Hardcover. Good/Acceptable.

Crime/historical novel set in New Orleans by a noted detective story writer, very nice copy with only mild wear to the cloth cover, a few dust marks to edges, and slight chipping and creasing to a predominantly good dust-wrapper with some soiling and specks of stain to the back. First UK Edition. Hardcover. Very Good/Good.

New edition of a novel first published in 1955, signed by author to title page, very clean cloth cover with mild wear, some foxing marks to edges, d/w is chipped and rubbed in places, with two small tears to front, wear to top of spine, and small patches to front and a strip to the spine where the surface has been worn, showing white beneath, some fading of colour to spine, spilling over to front and back of jacket, but otherwise clean and bright; scarce in hardback, and even scarcer signed.. Signed by Author. New Edition. Hardcover. Very Good/Good.

USA: Harcourt Brace, 1947. The American edition with orange pictorial title page (same as cover) and no internal illustrations. Code on copyright page (f.5.47) presumably indicates a 1947 printing. Beige boards are browned with spotting, waterstain to lower rear cover (extending to corner of rear endpaper), some wear to corners and spine ends, straining/cracking near card title page, otherwise text generally very good. Orange dust-wrapper is faded/browned to spine with stains, chips and small losses, spine and flap folds are creased and rubbed.. Reprint. Hardcover. Good/Acceptable.

One of 100 copies printed privately as stated, not numbered but apparently inscribed and signed by the author ('with best wishes from G.E.') to front pastedown, grey-green paper-covered boards with beige cloth spine, paper title panel on front cloth strip, some marks and dust to boards which are slightly bowed, extremities rubbed and pushed, edges rough-cut and dusty (26 pages), slight foxing to endpapers and pastedowns, internally very good with a little browning to page edges, final page has a black and white logo for 'Hall the Printer, Oxford'.. Signed by Author. First Edition. Hardcover. Good.
