FIRST EDITION, trade issue, of this thorough survey of sundials and roses (there was also simultaneously issued limited printing of 100). Thoroughly illustrated with black and white photographs of dials in various garden settings. The author was an amateur historian who wrote frequently on the Puritans and colonial America. Earle was a passenger on a ship headed for Egypt which was shipwrecked on Nantucket. She fell ill as a result of the ordeal, never recovering her health and dying two years later. A near fine copy, in publisher's gold, white and green decorated cloth.

Tipped-in at the front is the printed announcement "Her Majesty the Queen has been graciously pleased to accept the first numbered copy of this work". A survey of the grand collection of Staffordshire Pottery (1620-1880) assembled by Major Cyril Earle, covering the Stuart through Victorian periods. N.B. this copy lacking the engraved frontispiece portrait of the author. FIRST EDITION. Although the engraved title page states 1822, and the text title page 1823, this is the first edition, and the discrepancy is likely the result of the book being published in parts (see Cagle). A complete dictionary of cookery for the smaller household, perhaps new to servants. Contains many interesting recipes such as cowslip mead, snipes in ragout, and rhubarb soup. Also includes much useful household advice for activities including letting go a servant, soldering (useful for fixing pots), or dealing with a smoky chimney. Some foxing and age toning throughout. Boldly signed by the author on free front endpaper.

Edge Jr., President of Callaway Mills Company, given at a dinner of the Newcomen Society. The Newcomen Society of North America was chartered in 1961, following the earlier establishment in 1923 of the Newcomen Society in England. The focus is on "material history, as distinguished from political history". This includes education, business, banking, railroads, utilities, insurance, & other enterprises contributing to the progress of society. Some oxidation to staples, and a bit of age-toning to edges of wrappers, otherwise fine.

[Battle Creek, Mich: Postum Company, Inc, 1928. Octavo-sized booklet, stapled in wrappers (26.5 x 14.5 cm.), 32 pages. Illustrations throughout printed in blue and black. Title from cover. Stated "second edition, second printing". A promotional cookbook, advertising various Postum Company products including Grapenuts, Postum Cereal, and Minute Tapioca. Most of the content is not recipes, but rather instruction on how to achieve healthy nutrition for children in a school lunch context. Sections include "Energy Needs of the Body", "A Plan for the Day's Choice of Foods, "Lunch Brought from Home", "The Hot Lunch at School", etc. A few small, and light stains to rear wrapper panel. Otherwise fine.

On various papers, some with chromolithograph illustrations; some with embossed, debossed or die-cut elements; some with edges beveled and gilt. Texts in Arabic, French, German, and English. An unusual group of Egyptian menus from a moment when the British, Germans, and Austro-Hungarians were jockeying for Power in the region, and the last of the Khedive rulers was in power. The collection includes menus from Palais Ismaïlia; Palais D'Abdine; Savoy Hotel, Cairo; Ziftah Barrage; Hotel Angst; Unter den Belten bei den Chalifen-Gräbern, Kairo (under the straights at the Khalifa Tombs, Cairo); and Ghésireh Palace Hotel. ~ Four of the menus are from the Palais D'Abdine in November and December of 1902, and bear the coat of arms of Abbas Helmi II, Khedive of Egypt, the last to serve as King of Egypt before being deposed by the British in 1914. Publisher's advertisements at rear. ~ FIRST EDITION. The only issue (barring modern re-issues) of a wide-ranging and fascinating work. William Ellis, a farmer at Little Gaddesden, Hertfordshire for thirty years, details a wide variety of culinary and medicinal recipes, and gives advice on farmyard and household management. In addition to working as a farmer, Ellis was employed as a writer by the publisher, Osborne. Maclean praises the book for being "firmly based on experience in a given region - Essex and the country around it. It is one of the eighteenth-century books which conveys a feeling of direct communication and of confidence that the author invariably knew what he was talking about" (Maclean). A work on a moral approach to homemaking and child rearing, pseudonymously offered by Timothy Shay Arthur, author of many work who helped, as much as anyone, to instill the ideal of a proper middle class in Americans. his most famous work was the popular Temperance novel Ten Nights in a Bar Room. Two-inch tear to edge of one leaf, otherwise clean. Disbound from wrapper but sound. Scarce. [OCLC locates four copies; Wright, American Fiction, vol. I (revised edition) 85].

In their excellent survey of historic German-Jewish cooking, Gabrielle and Sonya Gropman state that Elsasser's is "a book for Jewish housewives, and holds important secrets of the German-Jewish kitchen, such as a section of acceptable fat substitutions in a land of pork and lard." (The German-Jewish Cookbook: Recipes and History of a Cuisine). There are at least two distinct binding designs for this first edition: one with the image of the chef at stove stirring a pot, and with the cover title noted here; the second binding design depicts an upper middle-class woman holding a duck or goose on a platter surrounded by a flourish of botanical decorative forms, with the title as it appears on the title page. New York: Knopf, 1939. Octavo, 408 pages. FIRST EDITION. An early diet book, containing what appears to be a surprisingly sensible approach to weight loss. In the foreword titled, "Accidentally, I Become the Father of a Hornets Nest of Fads," in which the author relates the story of Hollywood starlet desiring to lose forty pounds in four weeks. He asked her what she liked to eat and recommend that she eat it every meal, for four weeks. Her favorites happened to be pineapple and lamb chops, so when she lost the weight, she told other starlets that the secret was lamb chops and pineapple, thus starting a fad. Without the lamb chops, this might have been the forerunner of the Beverly Hills Diet. About half the book is dedicated to seasonal, daily menus, with calorie counts. Like many other Knopf books of this era, this one is designed by W.A. Dwiggins, and is handsome. Laid-in is an original photograph (20.5 x 16 cm.), signed by the photographer "Thos. Tindall, Hancock?" (the subject of the photo is presumably the compiler, R.H. Murphy). ~ A "manuscript" cookbook with more than three hundred eighty recipes in ditto or mimeograph (alternating blue or black ink), many with holograph edits. Based on the style of edits (textual and not culinary) and the detailed Table of Contents, it seems likely this was a compilation being prepared for publication. An interesting cookbook of Turkish recipes assembled by Chef Ilyas Erturk of the Buyuk Efes Hotel. He represented Turkey at the London International Hotel and Catering Exhibition of 1966 and was awarded first prize. The first part of this book contains testimonials from Turkish officials, praising Erturk for his work in London or at the Buyuk Efes. The testimonials are accompanied by grainy photos of the Chef with the functionaries. A short description of five hundred years of Turkish kitchens follows. The recipes are arranged into sections of: Soups, Fish, Eggs, Meats, Poultry, Giblets, Vegetables, and Puddings. Text block somewhat age-toned; small stain to front free endpaper. In blind-ruled red cloth, over red morocco spine, compartmented with gilt title and four gilt decorations; marbled endpapers; hinges expertly restored. Ink stamp to title page and half-title of the grand culinary suppliers Dupont et Malgat who were also the publishers of Saulnier's Repetoire de la Cuisine. Bookplate to front pastedown of the Carl Sontheimer Foundation. Sontheimer was the creator of the Cuisinart, and a significant collector of culinary books. Paris: Flammarion, 1935. Duodecimo (18 x 11.5 cm.), 79 pages. Advertisements. Later printing; originally issued in 1927 with 72 pages and just "120 recettes pour l'accommoder". Date of printing from printer's slug in rear. This small work by the great chef proposes to rediscover the merits of rice and offers one hundred thirty recipes to cook with rice. Escoffier (1846-1935) praises the merits of rice by retracing its origins, highlighting its nutritional value and health benefits, which he claims are much better than those of potatoes. The final small chapter (page 73 ff.), signed by the "Société des rizières méridionales, à Marseille", is titled "Riz et la Faculté de Médicine" and discusses the benefits of rice for the digestive system.
