1828. Paper a bit marked; small mended tear and a crease to the paper bearing inscription and signature. Image size approx. 3-1/2 X 4-3/4 in., matted with three windows accommodating engraving, inscription, and signature. Portrait engraving after the well-known image by William Marshall Craig, published in an engraving by Mackienzie in 1808. This engraving has the signature "Kenneley" and we suspect it was likely done at the time of Edgeworth's death. Kenneley has added the title of her famous book "Practical Education" to the image. A novelist and scholar, Maria Edgeworth advocated for female education and was an inspiration to Jane Austen.

Neat ownership signatures on each half title; bookplates on each front pastedown; some minor wrinkles and creases; covers rubbed, but sound; wear to backstrips, with a small portion on Vol. 2 pulled free and a larger portion of Vol. 4 reglued.. Six vols, 8vos; viii, 416, 390, 368,460, 392, 452pp, all half-titles present; contemporary calf and marbled boards. Uniformly bound set of Edgeworth's popular stories, with the last three volumes being from the fourth edition and the first three from a subsequent edition. One of the most successful female novelists of her time, Edgeworth's enduring impact was as a champion of female education.

London: J. Johnson, 1800. Second Edition. Bookplate; tidelines around endpapers; slight damage to gutter of title page at verso, where it seems to have been roughly opened at one point; covers rubbed, hinges tender. 8vo, xvi, 214pp; contemporary polished calf. The second edition of Edgeworth's novel appeared in the same year as the first, but added a lengthy glossary at the end, explaining with wit a number of the idiomatic phrases she employed. An influential work, being one of the first Anglo-Irish novels, an early historical fiction, as well as an early use of an unreliable narrator. This copy bears the armorial bookplate of the Marquis of Stafford, who at the time would have been George Grenville Leveson Gower (1758-1833) who was named Duke of Sutherland in 1803 and was, for a time, the richest man in England.

Small poster announcing this series, with a list of sponsors that includes, among others: George Antheil, Merle Armitage, Paul Strand, Bruno Frank, Ernst Lubitsch, Melvyn Douglas, and John Steinbeck. Among the presenters were Irving Pichel with Michael Blankfort on the "History of Motion Picture Production"; Fritz Lang on the "Influence of Foreign Theory and Technique," with Anatole Litvak; Joris Ivens on "Documentary Films" and Donald Ogden Stewart on "Censorship." One date corrected by hand in ink.

Course catalogue from the university in the final year before its usurpation by the Nazi regime. A tipped-in corregienda slip names the great pacifist theologian Dietrich Bonhoeffer as a lecturer. The faculty at this time boasted numerous Nobel prize winners and great scholars, including (and named in the catalogue) Fritz Haber, Otto Hahn, Max von Laue, Lise Meitner, Walther Nernst, Max Planck, Robert Remak, Erwin Schrödinger, Leo Szilard, and Otto Warburg. Also listed is philosophy professor Eugen Fischer, who was to become rector of the university under the Nazis and a primary theoretician of Nazi eugenics justifying racial genocide.

A thorough guide to student life, with maps, diagrams, photographs, and cartoons, as well as some advertising for local businesses and an introductory statement from college president, the philosopher Sydney E. Mezes on the significance of public higher education in New York. Abel Meeropol would become a prominent figure in the labor and and civll rights movements of the subsequent decades.
