Hertford, printed for the Author by Stephen Austin, Fore Street, Bookseller to the East India College, [1851]. 8vo. Original blue pictorial cloth (recased); pp. xx, 393, 7 (advertisements), chromolithographic portrait-frontispiece, 122 tinted lithographic plate, double-page map, battle plan and folding genealogical table, light marking to cloth, browning and spotting to varying degree, a good copy of a scarce title with an interesting provenance. The standard work on Sindh before Napier, this copy with the contemporary blind-stamp of the Rajah of Mysore, Krishnaraja Wodeyar III (1799–1868). The diplomat and orientalist Eastwick served in Kathiawar and Sindh in the 1830s and wrote several useful books, all of which are hard to find.

Bound by Zaehnsdorf in blue morocco, elaborate circular coloured leather inlaid design with gilt edge recreating the frontispiece image of the Earth in shadow, spine with circular brown morocco lettering piece and gilt lettering, marbled endpapers, all edges gilt, in original grey cloth solander box; pp. 256, illustrated throughout in colour and b&w; with loose receipt from Zaehnsdorf to the original owner and promotional leaflet from the WWF; fine. No. 212 of limited edition of 265, signed by Prince Philip to title page. This deluxe, specially bound edition of the Duke of Edinburgh's book on rare species and wildlife conservation was produced in support of the World Wildlife Fund. Zaehnsdorf gave it a particularly lavish treatment reflecting the prince's passionate commitment to the conservation cause.

London, Printed and Published by "West Africa," Limited, [1906]. 8vo. Original printed wrappers; pp. 34 portrait of a young Churchill as frontispiece (in pagiantion), errata slip; a few illustrations after photographs; wrapper a bit marked, otherwise a good copy of a great rarity. Separately paginated offprint. This publication served as well as an advertisement for the Elder Dempster Shipping Company, founded by Sir Alfred Jones, the caption under whose portrait describes him as Empire Builder in West Africa. He was the magnate of colonial interests and investment in West Africa and the Congo. That his portrait would be included in this publication is obvious, but the one of the Under Secretary of State for the Colonies, Mr Winston S. Churchill, is less so. In the preface Richard Edmondson writes that both are described as being men of great service to 'Empire, Commerce and Humanity' (p. 3). COPAC records a single copy, at Oxford; not in COPAC.

Provenance: ffep inscribed by the author 'To my old chum Freddy O. and his good missus. Life isn't all honey, but friendship is the honey of life; so here's a bumper to every busy bee, include our nobles selves! TE Christmas 1906'. The book wasn't published until 1907, so this was one of the author's own advance copies. Also included is an ALS from Edwardes to the same recipient date 21st May 1909, single sheet neatly torn along centre fold, in which the writer makes arrangements to visit his friend and encloses a copy of his latest book The Lore of the Honey'Bee. With a receipt for this book from Blackwells of Oxford dated 16th April 1945 made out to C.W. Contemporary tree calf, sometime neatly rebacked, contrasting lettering piece; pp. [vi], xxiii, [i], 247; one large folding map, pasted to front endpapers; minor scuffs, map torn across but neatly repaired and supplied from a later edition, small paper flaw on 2H1 affecting one word on both pages, minor finger-soiling, otherwise a good, wide-margined copy. First edition. Edwards, himself a West Indies merchant and planter, here offers much information on the island of Santo Domingo. His book was published shortly after the 1791 slave revolt in Santo Domingo, and indeed Edwards levels much criticism at the French for their treatment of the slaves and their rejection of help from English concerns in the West Indies. Edwards argued in his other published works for free trade between the colonies and America, and this sentiment informs some of his analyses in the present work. Sabin 21894; Cundall 430.

Original cloth with illustrated dust-wrappers, most likely designed by the author; pp. [viii], 167, portrait frontispiece pasted onto verso of half-title, signed presentation inscription by the author underneath; the rarely seen beautiful wrappers with old repairs on verso and with a few marginal flaws; apart from very light scattered spotting internally, a very good copy of a rare work. First edition. Arthur Trystan Edwards (1884-1973) was an architectural critic, town planner, illustrator and amateur cartographer who during the First World War served in the Royal Navy. This is his first-hand account of life on the lower deck, hard labour and class division at high seas during a war. However, 'he liked the service so much that he spent twelve peacetime years as a Royal Naval Volunteer Reserve rating, and considered his naval experiences one of the major cultural influences of his life' (ODNB).

Very uncommon first edition. Arthur Trystan Edwards (1884-1973) was an architectural critic, town planner, illustrator, and amateur cartographer who during the First World War had served in the Royal Navy. The cover shows the Roof Garden House in Bickley, with the cover artwork described in 2015 by RIBA's British Architectural Library as "[an] image charged with the energetic spirit of Art Deco".

Original mid-brown cloth lettered in white to upper cover, pictorial colour-lithographed endpapers (different at front and rear), preserved in pictorial dustwrapper; pp. [28]; beautifully and strikingly illustrated throughout with single-, and double-page, lithographed plates in alternate full colour and monochrome; externally fine, internally clean, in a bright and attractive, price-clipped dustwrapper with toning and rubbing to spine fold, nicking to spine ends and forecorners, and a contemporary gift inscription in ink to front flap. First edition, also issued in pale blue cloth and in pictorial boards, with no precedence known. A deservedly popular and quirky book in rhyme about a young girl, Mary Belinda, who eventually escapes the strictures of her ten fearsome aunts (who each look like Mary Poppins) as she tries to have fun on the beach.

No place or printer, c. 1925. Linen-backed and folding, measuring 47 by 61 cm; explanation in French and English pasted onto verso; very well preserved. This rare map has the Imperial Airways route to Basrah drawn and lettered by hand in lilac ink on the Northeastern edge, below is part of the Hedjaz Railway. In 1927 Imperial Airways took over the RAF Baghdad - Cairo service and extended it to Basra. This province in Northern Saudi Arabia is now being developed into a nature reserve and is rich in ancient buildings and archaeological sites.

Full red morocco, titled in gilt to covers and spine, all edges gilt, in slipcase; xii, 140 (1, limitation page), 5 plates containing a series of 19 individual hackles; a near fine copy, with only a little mild surface wear to slipcase. Limited edition, this being copy 61 of 85. A rare and lavish book on the subject of hackles, the feathers wound around a fishing fly which give them much of their aesthetic appeal. As a long time breeder of high grade cock hackles, Frank Elder wrote the draft of this book towards the end of his life. After his death, it was released a few years later in both a standard edition and under a very small limitation. The book covers all subjects relating to hackles, covering their size, colour, proportions and so on, with the degree of precision you would expect from a leading authority on the matter. The book is closed with a series of 29 hackles laid in.

A very good set in the original publisher's cloth, with half titles present in all three volumes and the four page publisher's ads present to the rear of Vol III. First edition, with misprint "here" for "her" on line 1 of p.29 (believed to be one of only a few hundred out of the total of 19,950 copies issued with this misprint). A witty comedy of keeping up appearances in a West End drawing room, including, of course, interjections of Eliot's view of the bleak hollowness of materialism which haunts post-war Britain. Original dark green cloth pictorially blocked in black and white to spine and upper cover with a design featuring a pair of Pacific Islander clubs, lettered in gilt; top edges gilt; pp. xii + 211; with 68 coloured plates protected by captioned tissue-guards and a folding map to the rear, printed in sepia; a very nearly fine copy in uncommonly bright and sharp condition with minor bruising to spine ends and a tiny (3mm) scuff to upper cover, internally fine, fresh, and unspotted. First edition. Includes descriptions of British New Guinea, the Solomon Islands, and the New Hebrides. According to Inman, the book was published in blue cloth, but of the 3000 copies printed, 2300 were bought as remainders and bound in green cloth. Inman A & C Black Colour Books 74. Reportedly this is the best read in the whole Twenty Shilling Series, with a very engaging text.

First edition.Elsner was the author of a number of travel books on the Mediterranean countries, including Morocco, Corsica, France, and Spain. In this book she visits the Basque provinces (four out of the eleven chapters), Crete, Palermo, Corsica, Majorca, Malaga, and Morocco.

First edition. Elton joined the army and served in India, China, and Mexico before being sent to Natal, where he spent two years travelling. In 1873, he was appointed political agent at Zanzibar, then in 1875 British consul in Portuguese territory, with residence at Mozambique. He undertook numerous expeditions aimed at the suppression of the slave-trade. In 1877, he made two journeys from Mozambique, the first taking him to the Makua country and then north into the Zanzibar mainland territory. In July that year he departed again from Mozambique for the Zambesi and Shiré rivers and reached Lake Nyassa, exploring the surrounding region. Very rare first edition of this discussion of emigration from Malta to Australia, Canada, the US, France and other European countries. 'The natives of the Maltese Islands are people of pure European race, born within the British Empire, who require no such leavening in order to carry and preserve the traditions of the British Empire, and I submitted to Colonel Smith that physically and morally they are the equals of any of the Northern European people' (p. 16). Great! 'Mr Casolani [1869-1940] was Superintendent of Emigration, in charge of the Department of Emigration until he retired in 1930. During his period in office, more than 30,000 prospective migrants applied and were interviewed by Mr Casolani. First edition. Fitzgibbon was a friend of his fellow Irishman the tackle maker William Blacker, and was an ambitious angling writer. This was the first comprehensive guide to the salmon to be written and is rightly prized for the quality of the plates, printed by the Adlards, as well as for the clear, authoritative text. Aphrodisias was a free and autonomous city within the Roman province of Asia, in Western Turkey. It was best known for the sanctuary of its patron goddess, Aphrodite, and for its marble sculptors. The community prospered under the early and middle Roman empire (first-second centuries AD), when it built a complete set of marble buildings that made the town a proper city in ancient eyes. Aphrodisias sheds valuable light on interaction between Greek and Roman identity, the functioning of empire, religious conflict and accommodation, and transition from antiquity to the Middle Ages.
