An unusually decorative and lively photo album documenting the recreational and romantic life of a group of central Illinois friends in the early 20th Century. This album is striking for its attractive, neatly accomplished manuscript captions and illuminations-with cobwebs and other patterns and devices-in white ink, enhancing a lively photographic record of the lives of a group of friends consisting mainly of courting-age adults, apparently from quite prosperous families. Salt Lake City, Utah: Monte Cristo Gold Mines Co., [1917]. llustrated Broadside, 22" x 8", image size, 8" x 6.5". A promotional broadside centering on "poet-prospector" Clarence E. Eddy's evocative narrative of his discovery of a new mine in central Idaho, which he now announces to the public. Featured at the top is "one of the few pictures thus far taken at the new Monte Cristo mine" in Custer County, Idaho, where Eddy-identified here as President of Monte Cristo Gold Mines Co.-made a big gold strike. He is shown in a larger than life pose proudly standing atop a mass of ore with a mining pick on his shoulder. It is noted that this ore-mined out of a mammoth ledge at 150 ft. depth in a nearby tunnel-averages some $115,00 per ton. CONDITION: Good, head and foot of spine chipped, wear and some splitting along edges of spine, covers rubbed and spotted with some loss to ink in blue medallions at each corner of cover designs, light foxing to contents. A large format work for the gift book trade, combining very fine hand-colored lithographs with elaborate, handsomely printed, chromolithographic borders. First edition of this important history of the first African American regiment raised after the Emancipation Proclamation and the first to consist entirely of free Black volunteers from the North, by one of its white officers. The most renowned of the African American units to fight in the Civil War, the 54th was commanded by Boston abolitionist Robert Gould Shaw and included two of Frederick Douglass's sons.
