Looks like the interior front hinge may have been cracking and a former owner glued the front fly leaf edge to the hinge to strengthen it. Evans was born in England and he and his brother were both reformers with Evans joining the New Lebanon Community where he became Elder of the North Family. This New Lebanon family was the most reform minded community of Shakers. They were vegetarians, anti-vivisection, pro- rights for women and minorities, pro-labor and more.
