ALS. An American inventor, Earle perfected cotton and wool cards. One of the problems Samuel Slater had with cotton manufacturing is procuring cards for the raw materials. In 1785, Earle became connected with Edmund Snow in the manufacture of hand cards for carding cotton and wool, and in 1786 he established himself in the business. An archive of fourteen legal documents relating to land ownership on the Eastern Shore of Maryland. Most of the documents date to the mid 18th and early 19th centuries and relate to the estates of Hackton and Bayard’s Large Range, and areas along the Tuckahoe Creek. Prominent Maryland residents whose names appear in the several hand indentures include Scottish-born businessman Francis Sellers, his father-in-law Henry Downes, John and William Tillotron, and the Troup family. DS. 2pg. January 4, 1954. New York City. A New York City Police Department pistol permit signed “Charles Edison” on the verso and with his left thumbprint. The front of the document states that the sixty-three year old lives at 301 Park Avenue and is Chairman of the Board of Thomas A. Edison, Inc. At the top is typed “Colt-38-701433”. There is a vertical central fold, probably from where he folded it to put in his wallet, and an impressed seal through much of his photograph. The permit is accompanied by two 1953 letters from the Police Department’s Pistol License Bureau to Edison about the application.

A black-and-white image signed “To Miss Barbara Ann Payne Thos. A Edison”. The print reproduces a drawing of Edison in three-quarter view. Per materials that accompany the photograph, Barbara Ann, the daughter of Lillian and Judd Payne, was born in December 1926 and then mailed this image; the father was in publishing and worked for Funk & Wagnalls, among other companies. Photographs of this size are much scarcer than normal 8” x 10” Edison signed photos. It is generally in fine condition with the extreme upper right corner missing and light chipping and faults to the margins.

OLIVER ELLSWORTH (1745-1807). Ellsworth was a Founding Father, lawyer, Senator, and United States Supreme Court Chief Justice from Connecticut. ADS. 2pgs. September 17, 1779. Hartford. An autograph document twice signed “Oliver Ellsworth” (once recto and once verso). The Revolutionary War-era document directs the Connecticut State Treasury to pay Ellsworth £1909.7.6 for prosecuting various people. It lists seventeen separate cases and the amount owed for each one. The document is mainly in Ellsworth’s hand with additions in another hand. There are also two other signatures. It is in very good condition with losses along the edges and wear to the numerous folds.

He was a Congressman from Massachusetts, Governor of Massachusetts, and Secretary of State, as well as Minister to Great Britain and President of Harvard. Signed pamphlet. 33pgs. 1836. Boston. A printed pamphlet, inscribed and signed “Hon. James Savage with the best respects of E. Everett”. The pamphlet reproduces one of Everett’s speeches, “Address of His Excellency Edward Everett to the Two Branches of the Legislature on the Organization of the Government, for the Political Year Commencing January 6, 1836”. It was printed by Sutton and Bentworth of Boston in 1836. When he gave this speech to the Massachusetts State Legislature, he was soon to be inaugurated as Governor. The simple pamphlet, with staple binding, is in good condition with bands of toning on the front cover and significant wear to the edges. Everett signed the upper margin.
