Title page and preface are both dated 1762. Complete in 4 volumes, as stated on the title pages. Printed the same year as the 8 volume second edition. Bound in the original full leather bindings. Gilded spines, raised hubs. Royal Quarto Sized. These are large books. Engraved frontis after Hogarth. Printed on quality rag paper. These measure 10.25 inches tall. 8.5 inches deep. 9 inches of shelf space. Printed for A. Millar in the Strand, in 1762. In excellent condition, with generalized wear. These are the original bindings. There appears to be old repairs, as well as more recent archival restoration, including some hinge restoration. The hinges are attached, although there is a lot of external rubs/wear and starting. Printed on quality paper that is very fresh and well preserved. Some foxing. These appear fully intact. The first three printings are not formally distinguished, though priority is given to the unbattered text, according to the Fitzgerald Bibliography by Brucolli. Bound in the publisher's green woven cloth binding. The spine embossed in gilt, with the cover blindstamped, as issued. A fairly simple, yet pleasing binding. This book comes together with a facsimile (reproduction) dust jacket, for protection and aesthetics. The facsimile jacket is protected in a removable archival plastic dust jacket, as well. In Very Good condition. Only light usage wear. Hinges are sound. Internal rear hinge paper with archival reinforcement and materials. Near free of foxing. First Printing, with all required points in accordance with the Fitzgerald bibliography by Bruccoli: 1925 on the title and copyright pages. The Scribner's Seal on the copyright page. And all typing errors: 1) Page 60, line 16 says "chatter". 2) Page 119, line 22 says "northern". 3) page 205, lines 9-10 says "sick in tired". 4) Page 165, line 16 says "it's", and on line 29 (the bottom line) space after "away". 5) Page 211, lines 7-8 says "Union Street station". This book was originally issued with a dust jacket that is now virtually unobtainable, and not included with this copy. Copies of the dust jacket are seldom seen, with the few that are available, and still intact, listed between one-hundred and five-hundred thousand dollars. Gilded spines. The top edges are gilded. Printed on thick quality paper. Wide margins. Well laid out, these are a pleasure to read. Thick block plate illustrations, a work of art in themselves. These are very large books measuring 10 inches tall. these take up 31 inches of shelf space. In VERY GOOD condition. Supple leather bindings. The hinges are all strongly attached, and held extra firmly by the thick leather, and underlying cords. There are a few traces of rubbing/starting in a few sections, from abrasion.
