London: A. Millar, Opposite Catharine Street, In The Strand, 1762. FIRST COLLECTED EDITION. With the life of the author. FIRST COLLECTED EDITION OF FIELDING'S WORKS. Title page and preface are both dated 1762. Complete in 4 volumes, as stated on the title pages. Printed the same year as the 8 volume second edition. Bound in the original full leather bindings. Gilded spines, raised hubs. Royal Quarto Sized. These are large books. Engraved frontis after Hogarth. Printed on quality rag paper. These measure 10.25 inches tall. 8.5 inches deep. 9 inches of shelf space. Printed for A. Millar in the Strand, in 1762. In excellent condition, with generalized wear. These are the original bindings. There appears to be old repairs, as well as more recent archival restoration, including some hinge restoration. The First printing with unbattered type on p. 38 (lines 6-9), p. 248 (lines 21-24) and the page number '90' is unbattered as well. The first three printings are not formally distinguished, though priority is given to the unbattered text, according to the Fitzgerald Bibliography by Brucolli. Bound in the publisher's green woven cloth binding. The spine embossed in gilt, with the cover blindstamped, as issued. A fairly simple, yet pleasing binding. This book comes together with a facsimile (reproduction) dust jacket, for protection and aesthetics. The facsimile jacket is protected in a removable archival plastic dust jacket, as well. In Very Good condition. Only light usage wear. Hinges are sound. Internal rear hinge paper with archival reinforcement and materials. Near free of foxing. True first edition published in June 1947. All later Dutch printings indicate such on both the title and copyright pages, this is the First Printing. Preceding the American (English language) edition (The Diary of Anne Frank) by five years. Bound in the original cream-colored paper boards, with a terra-cotta rectangle in the center of the front cover. With a portrait of Anne Frank, 2 photographs of the shelter, a plan of 'Het Achterhuis' and 2 facsimiles of author's handwriting. Roughly 7 inches tall. In very good condition and exceptionally well preserved. There is some light generalized wear to the binding. The hinges are very sound.
