Description:
London: Studio Vista, 1970. First Edition. Near Fine/Fine. First edition, cloth issue. 112 pp. Publisher's cloth lettered in silver. Slightly musty smell, else Fine in Fine dust jacket. Uncommon. Published only in the UK. Guitarist John Fahey's biography of another great and also often-overlooked guitarist with a singular style, Mississippi bluesman Charley Patton. Patton's songs, recorded in a spate of sessions in two short years (1929-1930) and then in two sessions in 1934, are legendary amongst blues aficionados for shedding light on the barely-recorded or documented early 20th century Delta Blues primordial murk. The recordings still possess that uncanny quality that makes hairs stand at attention on the back of one's neck and arms. His influence on a younger generation of musicians who popularized the genre such as Robert Johnson, Tommy Johnson, and Howlin' Wolf was profound.

Boston: Little, Brown & Company, 1952. First Edition. Near Fine/Near Fine. First edition. vi, 181 pp. Publisher's yellow cloth with navy spine lettering. Near Fine with light foxing to edges, in a bright dust jacket designed by Lew Keller, a little dust-soiled with a hint of wear at the head, else Fine. The jacket's vivid colors are completely unfaded. A splendid copy of a scarce book. At the height of Red Scare, Howard Fast, an outspoken Communist best-known as the author of Spartacus, penned this suspense novel under the pen name Walter Ericson, afraid that it would be censored under his real name; his fears were not without justification as he had been imprisoned in 1947 for contempt of Congress. In his memoir Being Red Fast calls it "a sort of antifascist mystery." The book was later retitled The Darkness Within. In 1965 it was made into the neo noir Mirage, directed by Edward Dymytryk.

New York: Random House, 1957. First Edition. First edition, first printing with repeated line on p. 327, second state binding, jacket lacks 5/57 but is priced at $3.95. Signed by William Faulkner on the title page, inscribed to fellow Southern writer Manly Wade Wellman, "To W M Wellman from Bill Faulkner, Richmond 15 December 1958." A very interesting association as Faulkner notoriously made a stink when he was snubbed for a mystery story award in 1946, losing out to Wellman, a prolific genre writer. Rumor has it that Faulkner was drunk and looking to pick a fight with Wellman (a former college football player) until he realized his size. But the feud appears to have been short-lived; Wellman was an admirer of Faulkner's style and wrote critically on it. Upon Faulkner's death in 1962, though, Wellman was offered his position as writer-in-residence at University of Virginia but turned it down.
