Description:
New York: Britton, 1917. First Edition. Affixed to the front free endpaper is the superb Mary Pickford & Douglas Fairbanks bookplate generally considered the finest bookplate from the Golden Age of Hollywood. The bookplate which reads “DOUGLAS & MARY FAIRBANKS - FROM AMONG THEIR BOOKS” is a large pictorial engraved affair. It very charmingly shows Douglas Fairbanks brandishing a sword over his head in his swashbuckling role as the masked Zorro in The Mark of Zorro (1920) and also depicts the lovely Mary Pickford clutching a bouquet of flowers in her lead role in the film of Rebecca of Sunnybrook Farm (1917). It is hard to conceive of the star power of Pickford and Fairbanks during the era of silent film (imagine the appeal of Angelina Jolie and Brad Pitt at the height of their relationship times ten). They were virtually the King and Queen of Hollywood, and an invitation to their Beverly Hills home, Pickfair, was like being invited to the White House. This copy was formerly owned by Twentieth… Read More

Description:
Garden City: Doubleday, 1973. First Edition. Signed and inscribed by the author, Philip Jose Farmer, to John Calley, President of Warner Pictures. Inscribed: “To John Calley, Apocalyptic Leader of the 86th Floor HQ of Warners, from Philip Jose Farmer.” The 86th floor remark in the inscription is a humorous homage reference to Doc Savage’s office on the 86th floor of the most imposing skyscraper in mid-town Manhattan in New York city. Fine in a fine dust jacket. Calley greenlighted George Pal’s 1975 film Doc Savage: The Man of Bronze film and he and Pal hired Farmer to write a sequel. Farmer wrote a film treatment but the failure of the first Doc Savage movie at the box office doomed the second film. During Calley’s tenure at Warners he was involved in the production of such films as Dirty Harry, A Clockwork Orange, McCabe And Mrs. Miller, Deliverance, Enter The Dragon, Mean Streets, The Exorcist, Blazing Saddles, The Towering Inferno, Dog Day Afternoon, Superman, and Chariots of Fire.

Description:
New York: Beacon, 1960. First Edition. Paperback original. About fine bright copy with a trace of use. The front cover is illustrated with a color painting depicting a nearly naked muscular man with antlers emerging from his temples clutching at a red metal cage, within which a terrified naked woman is screaming, with images of Washington, D.C. and a space ship in the background. From the rear cover copy: “Into this Flesh-adoring world Peter Stagg was plunged, to find himself changed by this queer new science into something part man, part beast, part god. His Flesh was stronger than ten men’s, his desires were driven by alien hormones in his blood, and each morning his tortured mind recoiled from the memory of what his body had done the night before!”
