Northern Bee Books. , 2014. Facs. Ed.. pp.iv, 32 with 30 colour reproductions of plates. A new softback. Geoff Hopkinson has added text to explain what is being shown in the plates. Originally the plates were 12’’ x 18’’ and they have been reproduced here at approximately half their original size. A fascinating insight into the understanding of bee anatomy in 19th century Italy. The set of 30 chromo-lithographed plates presented here were first printed in Milan in 1875. The original microscopic drawings were by Count Gaetano Barbo, and the lithographer was Fenghi. These colourful illustrations were subsequently used extensively by writers of the period.

An evaluation of the state of songbird populations in the Americas, the effectiveness of conservation programs such as the Neotropical Migratory Bird Conservation Program, and the reliability and completeness of scientific research on migrant birds. Faaborg shows that many factors besides habitat loss affect bird populations and that Neotropical migrants as a group are not declining dramatically, though some species adapt to habitat alteration more successfully than others.

David Fairchild (1869-1954) is one of the most famous plant hunters in history and was responsible for the introduction of around 200,000 plants and varieties of crops into the USA. His legacy also lives on in the form of the Fairchild Tropical Botanic Garden in Miami. Dr. A.J. Brooks was Director of Agriculture at Cape St. Mary, The Gambia. With correspondents from around the USA, Chicago produced its own gardening magazine (fortnightly) edited by William Falconer. Falconer was born in Scotland (b. 1850), trained at Kew, then emigrated to the USA in 1874. The aim of ‘Gardening’ was to be practical, unpretentious and ‘to teach the plain, ungarnished truth about every horticultural subject’.
