Signed on the title page by the Author and by Romola Garai who starred in the BBC adaptation. The book was signed at an event at Waterstone's Piccadilly (An Evening with Michael Faber and Romola Garai) held on Wednesday 27th April 2011. Signed and dated 26 ii 2009 by the translator. This book was signed by Michael Hoffman at the "Poems Upstairs and Upstairs-Poetry Club" in Dublin on March 4, 2020. From the D/W blurb: "An Astonishing Wartime Thriller and a Rediscovered Masterpiece". Originally published in Germany in 1947 it was inspired by a true story and is the gripping story of an ordinary man's determination to defy the tyranny of Nazi rule. It contains facsimiles of the original Gestapo files which inspired the novel. Alone in Berlin was filmed in 2016 directed by Vincent Perez and starred Emma Thompson, Brendan Gleeson, Daniel Bruhl and Mikael Persbrandt. Signed copies are uncommon. First UK Edition in publisher's original green cloth titled in gilt on the spine. viii & 302 pages, including the half-title, illustrated with 5 textual illustrations and 5 plates, including 2 folding plates. First edition of volume 2 of the collected edition of Faraday's "Experimental Researches in Electricity", complete in itself. There is some edge-wear to the backing cloth at the corner tips causing the boards to "peek out" mostly at the top right front panel. The spine tips are pushed with some edge-wear to the backing cloth. There is a 2cm split along the front gutter spine but this does not affect the binding. It is surface rubbing that has thinned the cloth over the years exposing the reinforcement strip behind the spine. A picture of a pack of cards being passed from one hand to another is printed on the half-title page and is visible through a circular cut-out on the front cover. A VG copy. A former owner (a practising magician) has written in fountain pen his observations on several of the card tricks on a few pages. Uncommon.

Spine a slightly lighter hue otherwise a near fine copy in in a D/W with minuscule fraying to the head and tail of the spine which is a touch darker. With the VERY SCARCE WRAP-AROUND BAND announcing "CARNEGIE MEDAL/ WINNER 1955/ for/ 'an outstanding children's book of the year'". The Wrap-Around Band is complete but slightly darkened to the spine. Eleanor Farjeon was that girl, who was so enchanted by her little bookroom that she recreated it by writing this wonderful collection of short stories selected by the author from stories published earlier in her career.
