New York: William Morrow & Company, 1964., 1964. First edition. First edition. Fine, bright copy in dust jacket, lightly sunned on the spine. Insurance again, this time a company that wants to set up an ongoing project to expose phony whiplash claims. Big ongoing retainer, big fees for each claim - Bertha's eyes glitter at all the legit dollars up for grabs. Donald is packed off to a dude ranch in Arizona to investigate the plaintiff in the first claim, with stern instructions not to stir this one up. It's not his fault someone's wife ends up dead in the Sierras, or that Sgt. Sellers is so annoyed at his 'amateur' interference that he throws away a key piece of evidence at the scene of the death. New York: William Morrow & Company, Inc., 1966., 1966. First edition. First edition. Inked gift inscription on the front free fly leaf by the author. Fine copy in lightly rubbed dust jacket with light wear to foot of spine and corners and with a tiny closed tear and a few tiny creases to bottom of rear cover. Blackmail was a dirty business, and Donald Lam liked to stay clear of it. But for his partner, Bertha Cool, no business was too dirty to handle at the right price. And the price for this job was certainly right. What was wrong, though, was a payoff for pictures that weren't worth a dime, a free dinner that cost the blackmailer his life, and more than a couple of double-crosses that framed Donald Lam quite neatly for a charge of murder. Twenty seventh book to feature Bertha Cool and Donald Lam.

Description:
New York: William Morrow & Company, Inc., 1967, 1967. First edition. First edition. Inscribed by the author on the front free fly leaf: "To Helen Moore, my Hollywood Della Street, with love from Uncle Erle. Erle Stanley Gardner." Helen Moore was secretary to the author. Bertha Cool was purring like a kitten. A client had just hired the agency to investigate a suspected insurance swindle, and in Bertha's glittering eyes, that was just the respectable sort of case they needed. Donald Lam had his doubts, but he began looking around for suitable bait to set a trap. What he didn't know was that the trap was already baited -- and more than ready to spring. Fine, bright copy in dust jacket with two small closed tears at bottom of front cover panel and reinforced on the verso with a small strip of cellophane tape.

New York: William Morrow & Company, Inc., 1970., 1970. First edition. First edition. Small "ding" to bottom edge of rear cover, else fine in lightly rubbed dust jacket with minor wear to head of spine, light vertical creases to inside front flap fold, and two tint closed tears to top edge of rear cover. Dope smuggling and a witness who is both more, and less, than he seems. It all starts when a client wants to find a missing writer – just to talk to him. A little digging (with descriptions of tracing techniques) shows his girlfriend has vanished too, and the trail goes south, to the Mexican border. Crossing the trail, going north, is a shipment of cannabis. Unsurprisingly for this business, someone ends up dead and the whole thing lands in court. Sorting out who did what and why taxes even Donald Lam's talents to the limit. Lam shows his considerable ability in courtroom maneuvering, which reminds the reader that he was a lawyer once. Twenty ninth and last book in… Read More

[London]: Little, Brown, [2017]., [2017]. First edition. First edition. Signed by the author. As new, unread copy in dust jacket. The last time Tess de Vere saw William Benson she was an intern law student. He was a twenty-one year old, led from the dock of the Old Bailey to begin a life sentence for murder. He'd said he was innocent. She'd believed him. Sixteen years later Tess overhears a couple of lackeys mocking a newcomer to the London Bar, a hopeless person with a murder conviction, running his own show from an old fishmonger's in Spitalfields. That night she walks back into Benson's life. The price of his rehabilitation and access to the Bar is an admission of guilt to the killing of Paul Harbeton. The government wants to shut him down, but there isn't a barrister that will do it. He's subsidized by a mystery benefactor and a desperate woman has turned to him for help: Sarah Collingstone, mother of a child with special needs, accused of slaying her wealthy lover.… Read More
