Woodcut printer's device on titles, 120 text woodcuts, a very few repeated. A few cuts with black dots (e.g., on p. 257), apparently from wormed blocks. Fol. K12 with short closed tear touching a woodcut, a few headlines shaved; some light discoloration. Late 18th-century English green calf, covers with gilt intertwining feather and pointillé border, smooth spine gold-paneled and tooled with 3 different all-over patterns, red calf lettering piece, gilt edges, marbled endleaves (worn: spine cracked, headcaps gone). Provenance: a member of the Fletcher family: engraved armorial bookplate, two gryphons as supporters, motto "Dieu pour nous," the shield described by Burke as "sable, a cross flory argent between four escallops. Posonius [Bratislava]: Georg Aloysius Belnay, 1804. 8vo (193 x 118 mm). 160 pp. Two engraved plates: portraits of the author and of Franciscus Barkóczy, by Sebastian Mansfeld of Vienna. Contemporary marbled sheep, smoooth spine gold-tooled in six compartments, the second with beige calf gilt lettering-piece, floral Kattunpapier endpapers (covers a bit scratched, dent in front cover). Provenance: book label of Edward John Kenney, Canadian classicist. *** Only Edition, a posthumous collection of previously unpublished Neolatin poems by a Hungarian priest, printed in Bratislava (Pressburg), now part of Slovakia. The verses include a eulogy to the dedicatee, Franciscus (Ferenc) Barkóczy (1710-1765), archbishop of Bratislava. Edited by the author's nephews, the edition is handsomely printed on thick paper.
