Undated. 2 pp. 5 x 4 inches, in good condition. F.W.Fairholt (1814-66) was an engraver and the author of antiquarian works. The first important work entirely illustrated by him was Jackson and Chatto’s Treatise on Wood Engraving (1839). He was also employed on the Art Journal.

Joseph Farington (1747-1821), landscape painter, gained fame through his engraved book illustrations (e.g. History of the River Thames, 1794) and for his Diary, which was published in 8 volumes as late as 1922-28.

Hampstead, 12 January 1771. 3 pp. 9 x 7 inches, in good condition. Colonel William Faucitt of the Guards, translator of the Regulations of the Prussian Infantry, was employed in Germany in 1775 raising troops for service in the Mediterranean and later in America. “When I was in Town yesterday, I hunted after a little news for you, but cou’d pick up none that was material. Nobody cou’d tell me, who wou’d succeed Lord Sandwich, as Secretary of State, tho’ there was a Report about, that Lord Suffolk had been sollicited to take it, which very few gave credit to. The great question, whether Peace of War, still undecided. I am so starv’d with Cold, I can hardly hold my Pen.”

London, 1931. English edition. 247 pp., illustrated. Original blue cloth, some fading. Henri Fauconnier (1879 – 1973), French writer, known mainly for his novel Malaisie, which won the Prix Goncourt in 1930. He developed rubber plantations in Malaya and elsewhere in the Far East.

Versailles, 16 June 1877. In French. A good one page example, 8 x 5 inches, ink annotation at head. Jules Favre (1809-1880), French lawyer and statesman, leader of opposition to the Second Empire.

Berlin, 19 October 1850. 2 pp. 8 x 5 inches, in good condition. Theodore Sedgwick Fay (1807-1898), author and diplomat. He wrote Dreams and Reveries of a Quiet Man (2 vols., 1832), which contained papers he had written for the New York Mirror, where he was an editor beginning in 1828. He married Laura Gardenier in 1833, and travelled in Europe for three years, while sending back articles to the Mirror. He served with ability in the United States diplomatic service, first as secretary of the legation at London briefly (1837), then at Berlin (1837–53), and next (1853–61) as Minister at Berne, Switzerland.

Paris, 10 January 1861. In French. 2 pp. 8 x 5 inches, in fine condition. Hervé Auguste Étienne Albans Faye (1814 – 1902), French astronomer, studied comets, and discovered the periodic comet 4P/Faye on 22 November 1843. His discovery of "Faye's Comet" attracted worldwide attention, and won him the 1844 Lalande Prize and a membership in the French Academy of Sciences. His work covered the entire field of astronomical investigation. It comprised the determination of comet periods, the measurement of parallaxes, and the study of stellar and planetary movements. He also studied the physics of the sun.

The Rectory Cottage, Fyfield, 22 July. 1 page 7 x 4 inches, traces of a filing hole, in good condition. George Manville Fenn 1831 –1909), prolific English novelist, journalist, editor and educationalist. Many of his novels were written with young adults in mind. His final book was his biography of a fellow writer for juveniles, George Alfred Henty.
