All gilt edges. In FINE condition. One tiny little mark just above author name on spine. Inside a really clean and tight copy. Size 10.5 x 8 inches 158pp. Ills. with 6 b/w woodcuts. Fictional account of a travelling roadmender/bricklayer in nineteenth century England. The fictional account is supplemented with actual events and colorful local histories. The Roadmender, when it appeared in 1902, was a publishing phenomenon, possibly partly because it is devoted to a place in Sussex easily reachable from London and partly because the author, Margaret Barber, died only three days after finishing it.
