Adelaide and Jamestown, South Australia : F. Humphris & Sons Ltd., [after 1902, and probably before 1920]. Chromolithographed bottle label, 71 x 94 mm; a fine example. Frederina Humphris (née Gotte, 1841-1925), the widow of Edmund Humphris, continued her husband's Jamestown enterprise, known as ""The Emu Factory"", after his death in 1880. The Emu Factory was one of the mid-north of South Australia's major commercial ventures, manufacturing beer, wine, tomato sauce, and butter, amongst a variety of other products. In 1902 the firm became a limited company, trading under the name of F. Humphris and Sons Ltd., under the management of two of Frederina's sons, Ralph E. and Frederick W. Humphris. The company had opened a factory at spacious premises on Carrington Street, Adelaide, in September 1901, where most of its sauces, pickles and other non-dairy products were bottled. An exceptionally rare copy of this curious publication, one of New Zealand's pioneering newspapers. The issue of November 8 1842 is not held in the Alexander Turnbull Library. Dating from the early phase of British settlement, prior to the first Colonial Parliament (1853), The Auckland Times was owned and edited by Henry Falwasser. The first issue was printed by Moore at the Government Printing Press and issued on September 5 1842. After only a few issues having been printed at the Press, the acting Governor, Lieutenant Shorland, prevented Falwasser from having use of the Press. A fine example of a rare pocket globe, sitting perfectly within its case. A rare and attractive miniature pocket globe showing Cook's third voyage. John Newton (1759-1844) was the founder of a firm of globe makers in London, established in the 1780s and continuing on, with the involvement of Newton's sons, throughout the nineteenth century. Lithographic postcard (after an original photograph), 87 x 137 mm; recto inscribed by the sender 'All good wishes from the Sackville Tribe'; verso with undivided back, mailed from Wagga Wagga to Brisbane with postmark dated 22 December 1904; in very good condition. The photograph reproduced on this rare early postcard apparently '... depicts the supposed butcher's shop operated by the infamous Tichborne Claimant, Tom Castro. In fact, it was a business that was dressed to look like a butcher's shop by enterprising commercial photographer William Fearne.' (Museum of the Riverina) Trove locates no examples of this postcard in Australian libraries.  The case of the Tichborne claimant produced two of the most celebrated British trials of the nineteenth century.
