Description:
Hagenau: Thomas Anshelm Badensis, 1518. Hardcover. Very good. Small 4to. 30 ff. Collation: aa - ff4, gg6, COMPLETE. Woodcut title page with columns and cherubs. Bound in 19th-century pale glazed boards, expertly rebacked. MARY MAGDALEN AND THE "QUARREL OF THE MAGDALENS." -- Lefevre d'Etables' "De Maria Magdalena et triduo Christi disceptatio" (1517) argued that Mary (sister of Lazarus), Mary Magdalene, and the penitent woman who anointed Christ's feet were THREE DIFFERENT PEOPLE. His claim provoked considerable debate - known as "the Quarrel of the Magdalens" - that continued into the 1520s. It is an extraordinary fact that the "Quarrel of the Magdalens" would find heated debate, nearly 500 years later," in the backlash against Brown's "Da Vinci Code" and his depiction therein of Mary Magdalene. "The opinion [of Lefevre d'Etaples], new at the time, gave rise to a violent controversy; refutations by Noel Bedier, syndic of the University of Paris, and John Fisher, the martyr-bishop of Rochester,… Read more

Description:
Paris: Chez Barrois, 1763. FIRST EDITION. Two volumes, 8vo. (197 x 136 mm). Ad I: [a]4, b-e4, f2, A-3Y4. 1 f., v-xliv, 543 pp. Ad II: A-5M4. 1 f., [3]-829 pp. Contemporary vellum over pasteboard (worn). Vol. II recased, with some damage to head cap and old restorations to spine and lower board, both end bands somewhat worn. Interior: Scattered minor stains and soiling. This is very likely the first book auction catalogue to include a separate chapter of Americana (see Vol. II, 363-368). 19,798 lots, PRICED. The fruits of seven decades of assiduous and selective collecting, particularly in medicine, the arts and sciences-more than 5800 lots in all branches of science, and a further 1500 in economics, logic and politics. So strong were the offerings of medical books the catalogue is considered de rigueur in the Special Collections at the world's major medical libraries: the Wellcome Trust, the New York Academy of Medicine, Harvard Countway, the National Library of Medicine, others. There are 3,672… Read more

Description:
Cape Cod, MA, 1793. Folio (paper stock ca. 300 x 200 mm). 24 pp. on laid paper, MS entries covering every page. In contemporary "home-made" rough canvas wrappers (worn), some damage (with loss of text) and inherent soiling to text. At least 8 ff. have been excised at the end and elsewhere. Fair condition, but an extraordinary survival. Preserved in a mylar L-sleeve backed with lig-free board. This crude manuscript graphically exhibits the extraordinary lengths to which colonial American students had to go in order to teach themselves. Provincial home-made textbooks such as this one almost never survive; we are unable to explain how -- or why -- this relic survived at all, especially considering its lamentable condition. The manuscript was certainly owned by the Higgins family of Cape Cod, who had descended from the Mayflower and who fought during the Revolutionary War (see below). The present ciphering book solves often complex math and word problems, generally in the service of commerce. Currency… Read more

Description:
Austin: [Harry Ransom] Humanities Research Center, 1967. First Edition. Good. Tall narrow 8vo. 71 pp., illustrated throughout. Original grey boards printed in black and red (lacking dust-jacket, corners a little bumped; ownership signature on verso of front endleaf; spine a little palm-soiled). NOT ex-library! With descriptions of 120 Bibles in the collection of the HRC, manuscript printed. A revision and an expansion of the 1960 exhibition catalogue "The Holy Bible" by Edwin T. Bowden. The present catalogue is handsomely designed with decorated boards, decorated endpapers, a decorated double-spread title-pages, decorated initials, and a number of illustrations. It is not without interest that the catalogue was issued BEFORE the HRC acquired the great Pforzheimer copy of the 42-line "Gutenberg" Bible.

Elaborately produced, full-color catalogue of 1,448 books printed by Aldus Manutius (1450-1515) and his heirs, preserved in the Staatsbibliothek zu Berlin. Most of the books came from the fabulous library of Count Etienne Mejan (1765-1846) which was acquired en bloc in 1847 by King Ferdinand Wilhelm IV of Prussia for the then enormous sum of 64,000 talers. The books are listed chronologically, with bibliographical and copy-specific information about bindings, provenance, etc. There are several insightful introductions, including discussions about the history of the Aldine Collection at the… Read more

Description:
Paris: Jules Gay, 1863. Hardcover. Very good. 16mo. xv, [1], 56 pp. With 2 engraved plates depicting different models of "ceintures de chastete" i.e. chastity belts (trifle foxed). Bound by [Cyprien] Lhuinte of Grenoble, green half morocco over blue marbled boards (spine a little sunned, extremities slightly worn), top edges gilt, others untrimmed. Highly curious work containing a legal argument against forced use of chastity belts -- unknown to David Murray "Lawyers' Merriments." From the preface (unsigned, but by Gustave Brunet): "There exists few trials as bizarre as this one, and we believe that the case involving Master Freydier remains unparalleled in the annals of legal literature" (translation). THE CASE: Pierre Berlhe (age 36) "seduced" Marie Lajon (age 18), imprisoned her and forced her to wear a chastity belt after she had refused to marry him. She lodged a complaint with the civic authorities, and retained the counsel of Nimes attorney Freydier (his first name is not recorded). The… Read more
