A comedy in five acts, first printed in 1706, by playwright George Farquhar (1677-1707). Born in Londonderry Farquhar attended Trinity College, Dublin, before deciding on a career as a stage performer. His theatrical pursuits were however short-lived, he retired from the stage having accidentally wounded a fellow actor. Following a move to London Farquhar took to playwriting, primarily comedies. Several of his works were produced, beginning with Love and a Bottle in 1699, and ending with The Beau Stratagem in 1707. Farquhar lived to know of the commercial success of his final play but died in penury. ESTC T46515.. 12mo.

The first edition of a life and bibliography of philologist and lexicographer Claude de Sainliens, alias Claudius Hollyband (1534-1594); the third published work of Lucy E. Farrer, doctor of the University of Paris. A Huguenot refugee from Moulins, Hollyband settled in England in the mid-sixteenth century, where he composed numerous linguistic treatises, including A Dictionarie French and English: published for the benefite of the studious in that language (London, 1593), one of the earliest French-English dictionaries and a primary source for Cotgrave's A Dictionarie of the French and English Tongues (London, 1611). . An apparently unrecorded handbill listing the members of the Highworth Association for the prosecution of felons, an organisation dedicated to 'detect and prosecute to the utmost rigour of the Law, all Persons who shall commit any Kind of depredations on their property'. The association, operating in the Wiltshire market town of Highworth, was, as with many comparable provincial organisations across the country, founded by local landowners to prosecute criminal activity committed on or to their holdings. A printing of the rules of the association was issued in 1784, thereafter numerous handbills were produced throughout the early nineteenth-century. . Dimensions 180 x 220 mm.
