Titles in red & black. Six vols. 4to, cont. vellum over boards (a few bindings a little warped). Wolfenbüttel: 1717-18-19-21-22-24. First edition of this catalogue which rarely appears on the market. Fabricius (1644-1729), was a leading classical philologist and inspector of the schools of the Duchy of Brunswick-Luneburg. This is "a biobibliographical dictionary. It is a roughly classified list of books owned by Johannes Fabricius, with brief but very valuable accounts of the life and writings of the various authors. Since larger and more recent reference works often do not mention these authors, who were chiefly minor sixteenth- and seventeenth-century scholars, Fabricius is likely to give helpful information. Fabricius was obviously more interested in giving this information than in making a catalogue of his library, for the Historia does not claim to be a complete catalogue."Taylor, Book Catalogues, p. 7(& see pp. 11, 108, 186, & 204). Minor browning but a fine set. ... Read more

Engraved vignettes on titles depicting the lemniscate & 16 folding engraved plates. xxiv, 528 pp.; xii, 536 pp. Two vols. Large 4to, mid-19th cent. half-vellum & marbled boards (occasional minor stains), entirely uncut. Pesaro: Stamperia Gavelliana, 1750. First edition of a rare work, containing the important collected writings of Fagnano (1682-1766), Italian nobleman and mathematician. Many of the texts printed here appear for the first time. Fagnano's advances in algebra and geometry were very far-reaching and his work on the rectification of the lemniscate made him, according to Legendre, the true founder of the theory of elliptic functions. This breakthrough was of great importance and was employed in the recent proof of Fermat's last theorem. "In algebra Fagnano suggested new methods for the solution of equations of the second, third and fourth degrees. He also organized in a rational manner the knowledge that scientists had of imaginary numbers, establishing for them a sp ... Read more

Woodcuts in the text. xxiv, 428 pp.; 2 p.l., 364 pp., one leaf of errata. Two vols. 8vo, orig. paste-paper wrappers (minor wear, some light foxing, minor dampstain to last 20 leaves of Vol. II), uncut, orig. printed labels on spine (chipped). London: W. Phillips, 1827. First edition in French (1st ed.: London, 1827). "This is Faraday's only monograph; it gives a splendid picture of his experimental genius, his ability to turn things to new uses, and also of the laboratory practice of the day...parts of it at least can still be read with profit by a chemist wishing to improve his basic laboratory techniques."-Knight, Natural Science Books in English, p. 141. The valuable notes have been added by the translator Raymond Balthasar Maiseau (1782-1843), who also converted English weights and measures into the metric system. Much of the text was reviewed by Antoine Alexandre Brutus Bussy (1794-1882). Very good set. ❧ Neville I, p. 443-"Rare.".

One folding engraved plate. [6] pp. Small 4to, attractive modern marbled boards, leather lettering-piece on spine. Augsburg: D. Francken, 1610. First edition and very rare. Faulhaber (1580-1635), a teacher of mathematics at Ulm and a friend of Kepler, made his most lasting accomplishments in the dissemination and explanation of the logarithmic method of calculation. One of Faulhaber's school's most famous pupils was Descartes, who studied there in 1620 (see William R. Shea's The Magic of Numbers and Motion. The Scientific Career of René Descartes, pp. 102-07). This is Faulhaber's second book and caused him considerable problems with the city's municipal council, as it was published without the permission of the office responsible for supervision of the schools. This book describes a surveying instrument invented by Daniel Speckle in the Netherlands. The fine plate depicts the semicircular instrument, which is divided into 220 parts. 1 p.l., 59 pp., 4 pages of engraved music printing. 8vo, cont. dark red morocco (minor foxing), a.e.g. Paris: la Veuve Allouel, 1741. First edition; this is, according to Grove, one of the two best early comic operas by Favart (1710-92), the most prominent member of a French family of dramatists, singers, and actors active in musical theater. Favart was a librettist, playwright, and impresario. This copy was presented to the Académie Française and bears the following inscription on a free front-endpaper: "Pigansé de la part de l'auteur a l'Academie le Lundi huitième May 1741." On the following three pages is a 34-line manuscript poem entitled "A Messieurs de l'Académie françoise [sic]" which wittily describes the journey of Favart and the advice given to him by a prose writer, a poet, and a wise author. Fine copy. ❧ New Grove, Vol. 6, pp. 438-39.

Toulouse: J. Pech, 1679. First edition, and now rare on the market; this copy belonged to Dominique François Jean Arago (1786-1853), the great French scientist who made important contributions to astronomy, electro-magnetism, and optics (see D.S.B., I, pp. 200-03). This book, Fermat's only substantial publication apart from his edition of Diophantus (both prepared and published posthumously by his son), contains the majority of Fermat's mathematical work. Included are Fermat's important researches on analytic geometry, developed concurrently with, but independently of, Descartes, as well as his method of maxima and minima, based upon which some have proclaimed Fermat the true first discoverer of the differential calculus. It is a companion piece - and sometimes bound with - his important De Arte Medica Infantium, Libri Quatuor, published in the same year. Woodcut vignette on title, printed in red & black. 96 unnumbered leaves (final two leaves blank, signature F bound after G), 8vo, attractive antique calf-backed paste-paper boards, spine gilt, red morocco lettering piece on spine. Strasbourg: T. Jobin, 1604. Fourth edition, enlarged. The first edition appeared in 1577, a second in 1591, a third in 1597, and a fifth edition in 1623. Fischart (1546-90), was a German satirist and the principal German literary opponent of the Counter-Reformation. Indefatigable with his pen, he attacked all perversities in the public and private life of his time: astrological superstition, scholastic pedantry, ancestral pride, but especially the papal dignity, the priesthood, and the Jesuits. This long encomium on gout ("Book of Comfort in Gout"), written in the tradition of Pirckheimer, Cardano, and Fleissner, attempts to console the victims of the disease through the power of laughter. Fischart wrote under many feigned names, here "I.F.G.M." ... Read more

Surveyinge. Anno Domini, 1567

[FITZHERBERT, John or Anthony]

  • Quantity available: 1
Title within architectural woodcut border incorporating the date "1534." Largely printed in black letter. 67 leaves, [8] pp. Small 8vo, antique calf by Sangorski & Sutcliffe, spine gilt, red leather lettering pieces on spine. [London: Printed by H. Wykes?], 1567. An early edition of the first text on surveying printed in English. The first edition was printed by Richard Pynson in 1523; all early editions are rare, as copies were used to death. Our copy is most unusual as it is fine and large with a number of lower edges uncut. Fitzherbert's book is concerned primarily with giving instruction to land stewards and overseers of the manor. The authorship of this work has long been disputed: was it Anthony Fitzherbert (ca. 1470-1538), judge and legal writer, or his older brother John (d. 1531)? The current scholarship supports John Fitzherbert as the more likely author. The book is "addressed to the landed interest and is an explanation of the laws relating to manors. Fi ... Read more

23 leaves. Small 8vo, attractive antique calf-backed paste-paper boards, spine gilt, red morocco lettering piece on spine. N.p.: 1601. Third edition; there were editions of 1594, 1596, our edition of 1601, and 1611. All are very rare, and there is no copy of any of these editions in North America. "Ritterorden des Podagrischen Fluss (Order of the Gouty Humor) is an allegorical poem which was composed in German by Georg Fleissner, a captain from Schoenberg, then residing in Schlackenwerth. These are two small Bohemian towns near Carlsbad. Its 1088 lines make this by far the longest poem about the gout. The story has two parts. The first 658 lines tell the origin of the goddess Podagra and of her Order, and the last 430 lines relate the ways in which she benefits mankind... "The first portion of the poem, in which the tales of the origin of goddess Podagra and of the establishment of the Order of the Gouty Humor are told, was largely original. 157 leaves of text paginated 1-124 & 129-[317] (nothing seems lacking). Large 4to (318 x 215 mm), cont. sheep-backed black cloth (extremities slightly worn), title in gilt on spine. S.l.: [c. 1852]. A finely written and illustrated manuscript with highly technical observations on French naval artillery training and testing in the mid-19th century, which are complemented by numerous hand-drawn marginal diagrams and many tables. The present manuscript was composed by Floucaud de Fourcroy (1831-1929), a descendant of the famous chemist Antoine de Fourcroy, as a cadet aboard the Uranie, a former frigate converted into a training ship in 1851. By the end of his career, Floucaud de Fourcroy was a highly decorated admiral and commander in the Legion of Honor. The present manuscript recapitulates the curriculum of naval artillery in the middle of the 19th century. It begins with a survey of weapons classifications (artillery, rifles, swords, pikes, axes, etc.) and the situations in which to use them, ... Read more

A most attractive picture scroll, containing a series of finely drawn studies, almost all finished, of various flowers, plants, and tree branches. The only evidence of the name of the accomplished artist, who has exhibited here a fine technique, is illegible. At the beginning of the scroll, there is a mounted sheet of paper where it is written that the subjects include flowers and vegetables. The first illustrations depict a series of pine branches with short and then long pine needles, followed by a dramatic rendering of the paperplant (this has been illegibly signed by the artist). Next, we have a very long illustration of the gladiolus with wonderful orange flowers. This is followed by the Chinese bellflower with various studies of the flowers. Next are mountain lilies, with studies of white and orange flowers. Then we have a really charming depiction of the eggplant with its flower and bearing an adorable small eggplant. Following are fine renderings of the morning glory with several studies o ... Read more

One full-page woodcut illus. & music printing. 16 folding leaves. 8vo, orig. wrappers, orig. block-printed title label on upper cover (rubbed), new stitching. [Japan]: ca. 1684-1704. First edition and, apparently, unique; no copy is located in WorldCat or Union Catalogue of Japanese Books. The miyogiri is a type of shakuhachi, an end-blown three-node bamboo flute with five finger holes. The various types of shakuhachi flutes have been some of Japan's most popular instruments. They were brought from China in the 8th century and became popular in 17th-century Japan when they were adopted by itinerant Buddhist beggar priests (komuso) of the Fuke sect, who were employed by the ruling warrior class. This rare and comprehensive work begins with a table of contents and a physical description of the miyogiri, along with instructions on correct embouchure. The next section is concerned with fingering techniques, which are illustrated in two diagrams on two pages. This is followed by a wonderful ... Read more

Two double-page plates & 80 engravings in the text. 8 p.l., 196, [16] pp. Folio, orig. carta rustica (covers a little soiled & spotted, first few leaves a little dampstained in outer lower corner). Rome: G.F. Buagni, 1696. First edition and a fine fresh copy of this finely illustrated work on baroque hydraulics. Fontana (1638-1714), was the most important Roman architect of his generation. This book "emerges from an actual design problem. The practical source for this theoretical work was the project for the raising of the water level of Lake Bracciano, necessary since the second fountain in Saint Peter's square, built by Bernini under Pope Clement X, was to be fed with water brought from this lake... In his discussion of the behavior of water, Fontana challenges Galileo's theory of flotation, positing water as heavier than earth. The technique of moving water through ... Read more

Three folding engraved plates. xvi, 431 pp. 8vo, cont. calf, spine gilt, red morocco lettering piece on spine. London: G. Robinson, 1775. First edition of a somewhat scarce book. "Francis Forbes, who was a great protagonist of the 'New husbandry,' was writing about it at about the same date [as Lord Kames and Cuthbert Clark] because he thought it necessary, and the most agreeable means of satisfying the public of its value was for authors of credit to make known their extensive experience and successful practice of culture for a long series of years. To do this he produced no less than four sizeable books."-Fussell, II, p. 112. The present work was the first in the series to be published. Forbes was an ardent admirer of Tull and a partisan of drill husbandry. The book is divided into four sections: a discussion of how to make fences from field stone, chalk, and wood; the treatment of manures and how to compost; Tull's theories of farming and the uses of the drill plough; and a ...
