Description:
[Cleveland]: Bérmunkás az I.W.W. magyar nyelvü lapja, [1932]. First Separate Edition. Softcover. Very good. 6 1/2 inches. 63,[1] pp. In Hungarian. Original printed wrappers, saddle-stapled. Contemporary typescript note tipped in providing English explanation of contents. Later inscriptions in Agnes Inglis's hand in front wrapper verso and p. [1] noting pamphlet as gift from the author to the Labadie Collection (see below); small rectangle in red pencil on front cover. Toning from note on p. [1], light soiling to wrappers. Very good. A worker's and labor organizer's manual in Hungarian, published in Cleveland, where the largest Hungarian population outside Hungary has long resided. Inscriptions and a folded typescript note tipped in at the front show this copy of the manual to have been a gift to the Labadie Collection, a major collection at the University of Michigan built principally by the Detroit-based anarchists Joseph Labadie (1850-1933) and Anna Inglis (1870-1952). The note translates the… Read more

Description:
New York: [s.n.], 1906. First Separate Edition. Softcover. Fair. 137-142 pp. including two in-text figures, table, and musical notation, plus folding plate. Original printed wrappers. Wrappers detached and significantly chipped and discolored, pencil and ink inscriptions and ownership inkstamp in front wrapper, internally clean. Fair to good. A scarce offprint of an article by American linguist and ethnologist Pliny Earle Goddard on a method of recording sung music directly to paper through the use of a kymograph equipped with a mouthpiece and "vowel recorder." The article includes illustrations of the equipment and an example, in the folding plate, of a Hupa song (also shown in standard musical notation) recorded by this method. Goddard (1869-1928) was an American linguist and ethnologist noted for his work on the Athabaskan peoples of North America. He was closely associated during the 1910s and 1920s with Franz Boas, who invited him to work with him at the American Museum of Natural… Read more

Description:
London: Printed by T. Spilsbury, for J. Johnson, 1788. First Edition. Hardcover. Very good. [i-ii],[2],[iv-v],[iii-iv],[v]-xvi,126 pp. (leaves A2 and A3 reversed), including dedication leaf (cancel), plus three plates (one folding). Modern calf, gilt leather spine label. Light scattered foxing, light dust soiling in title page, p. xvi scuffed, modern ink annotation on p. 31, offsetting from plates on pp. 29 and 115. Very good. Scarce complete first edition containing all three plates, including the rarely seen folding plate of pneumatic apparatus; the rarely seen dedication leaf to John Page is also present. The English physician Edmund Goodwyn (1756-1829) was evidently the first to publish discoveries on lung content values. The present work preceded Antoine Lavoisier's description of oxygen consumption of 1789 by a year and is based on Goodwyn's 1786 dissertation, "Dissertatio medica de morte submersorum," for which he won a gold medal from the Humane Society. ESTC T90151.
