The binding is quite firm; this is a relatively thick book. The dust jacket has a couple of large tears (2 in.) and frayed in some spots but is still colorful. It is protected by a clear archival protective cover. The interior of the book is very clean and bright, there is no writing or foxing detected. The frontis and eleven full page color plates by Kalmback and Murie are in excellent condition. The book includes detailed descriptions of all birds that have been found in Alaska including the range and life history of many. The book also includes a history of Alaskan ornithology, ecological zones found in Alaska, a gazeteer of geographical locations, and an extensive bibliography.

George Wahr. Ann Arbor. 1939. Third edition stated. xlvii, 158 pages. Hardcover. The green covers are in good condition, with moderate bumping on top and bottom of spine and corners. There is fading and some color loss and very small spotting to the covers and spine, especially along the edges. The spine color is faded, but title and author in gold are still visible. The binding is solid; the spine is rolled a bit. The interior of this book is in good plus condition. The only writing detected is a previous owners name on the front free endpaper. The pages are generally clean and bright.

The covers are in near fine condition, with only very minor bumping on the corners. The binding is solid. The interior of this book is also in near fine condition. The book includes stunning orange front and rear endpapers and a frontis that is a portrait of the author, von Goethe. The pages are clean and bright; there is no writing, markings, staining in this book. All of the page edges are gilded, with only a couple of small nicks in the gilt. The gold ribbon marker is fully intact. The book is illustrated with lithographs by Eugene Delacroix and is a very attractive copy of a famous work.

The front and back covers are colorfully illustrated with the same illustration that is on the dust jacket. The title and author are in blue on the spine. The dust jacket is in good minus condition; there are several small tears on the top and bottom, particularly associated with the spine; the longest is approx. 1/2 in. There is a red line (approx. 3/4" long) near the bottom of the front, the back of the jacket is soiled and contains some red staining near the bottom. The spine of the dust jacket is heavily sunned, the author and title are barely readable on it. The jacket is price-clipped. The dust jacket is now protected in a clear, archival removable cover. This is a very nice copy of the book that was awarded the John Burroughs Medal for Nature Writing in 1996.
