Stackpole Co., Harrisburg PA; Wildlife Mgt. Inst., Washington, D.C. 1959. 922 pages. Hardcover. The light green covers with title in dark green on cover and spine are in very good condition. The binding is quite firm; this is a relatively thick book. The dust jacket has a couple of large tears (2 in.) and frayed in some spots but is still colorful. It is protected by a clear archival protective cover. The interior of the book is very clean and bright, there is no writing or foxing detected. The frontis and eleven full page color plates by Kalmback and Murie are in excellent condition. The book includes detailed descriptions of all birds that have been found in Alaska including the range and life history of many. The book also includes a history of Alaskan ornithology, ecological zones found in Alaska, a gazeteer of geographical locations, and an extensive bibliography.

The green covers are in very good condition with some bumping/rolling on top and bottom of spine and corners and some minor scuffing on edges . There is some faint staining on front cover. The title, author and publisher are in black on front cover and in bright gold on the spine. The binding is solid, although the front hinge is a bit loose. The interior of this book is in very good condition. The pages are clean and bright, there is no writing, markings, or foxing detected. The book includes 8 full-page plates of black/white photographs. There are numerous other figures and data tables throughout the text. Chapter titles include "The Composition of Fruits", "Pruning", and "Pollination and the Sterility Problem".

The blue covers and black spine are in very good plus condition. The only issues are a tiny tear in the cloth at the top of the spine and faint scuffing near the bottom. The title and author are in silver color on the spine. The binding is solid. The dust jacket is in very good condition; there is some fraying along the top edge and small creasing at the bottom of the spine. The dust jacket is bright and attractive. The interior of the book is in near fine condition. It is clean and bright with no writing or makings detected. The book appears to be unread. This is a very nice copy of the book that was awarded the John Burroughs Medal for Nature Writing in 1996.

The dark brown covers are in good condition, with mild rubbing to the top and bottom of spine and corners. The title is in black on the cover and spine: however in both cases is is quite faded and barely readable. The binding is solid. The interior of this book is in good plus condition. There is a gift inscription to a previous owner on the front free endpaper (dated March 3, 1946). Otherwise, there is no writing detected in the book; the pages are generally clean, there are small spots on just a few pages. The frontis is a b/w photograph titled "Entrance Of Sodus Bay"; the book includes other photographs of the area and people. In general, aside from the faded title on the cover and spine, this is a very nice copy of a book that appears to be uncommon.
