Among his greater works may be named The Last Honors paid to Counts Egmont and Horn by the Corporations of the Town of Brussels, now at Tournai; The Death of Egmont, in the Berlin gallery; the Coronation of Baudouin, Emperor of Constantinople, painted for Versailles; The Temptation of St Anthony, in the palace at Brussels; The Siege of Antioch, Art and Liberty, Portrait of M. B. Dumortier and The Plague at Tournay, all in the Brussels gallery. A Gipsy Woman and her Children was painted in 1852. He also served as the director and president of the Académie Royale des Beaux-Arts.

Caledonian Asylum Office [London], 27 June 1817. 1 page 9 x 7 inches, left margin repaired, otherwise good. John Galt (1779 – 1839), Scottish novelist and entrepreneur, author of Annals Of The Parish and many other works, and a two volume Autobiography (1833). He was the first superintendent of the Canada Company (1826-1829) that had been formed to populate a part of what is now Southern Ontario, then known as Upper Canada, in the first half of the 19th Century. The company was successful and its achievement was later called "the most important single attempt at settlement in Canadian history".

A good one page example, 7 x 4½ inches. “Also, if it really does not inconvenience, come in ‘dress’ though I am not quite sure that the lady of whom I spoke will be able to come.” Sir Francis Galton (1822-1911), scientist and explorer (North and South Africa), cousin of Charles Darwin, founder of the study of eugenics. Galton had a prolific intellect, and produced over 340 papers and books throughout his lifetime. He also created the statistical concept of correlation and widely promoted regression toward the mean. He was the first to apply statistical methods to the study of human differences and inheritance of intelligence, and introduced the use of questionnaires and surveys for collecting data on human communities, which he needed for genealogical and biographical works and for his anthropometric studies. Given on board the Blake at Sea, 18 July 1809. 1 page 12½ x 8 inches, folds, in good condition. HMS Blake took part in the action of 15 August, which led to the French surrender. Alan Hyde Gardner, KCB, 2nd Baron Gardner (1770 – 1815) was the son of Admiral Alan Gardner, 1st Baron Gardner, and followed his father into the Royal Navy. In 1796 he was captain of the frigate HMS Heroine, and in 1805 of the 74 gun HMS Hero - in the latter he was present at the action off Ferrol in 1805 and led the vanguard at the Battle of Cape Finisterre later that year.

Milan, undated. In French. 2 pp. 8 x 5 inches, fine. Charles-Théophile Gaudin (1822-1866), Swiss paleontologist known for his research in the field of paleobotany. He studied theology in Lausanne, afterwards spending several years in England as tutor to the family of Lord Ashley. He then returned to Switzerland, where he concentrated on paleontological studies. In 1854 he began work as a tutor to Gabriel de Rumine, the son of Catherine de Rumine, with whom he founded the Musée industriel de Lausanne in 1862.

Given at Our Court at St James’s, 30 March 1763. 1 page 14 x 9 inches, with the integral blank leaf, in good condition, a few minor repairs and tears at centre fold, horizontal folds. King George III (reigned 1760-1820). John Stuart (1713-1792), 3rd Earl of Bute, Prime Minister or First Lord of the Treasury (26 May 1762 – 8 April 1763), and one of the rarest of Prime Minister autographs. He was a powerful secretary of state from 1761 and succeeded Newcastle as First Lord of the Treasury in May 1762. Frederick North (1732-92), known as Lord North, was Prime Minister from 1770-1782 and was largely responsible for the measures which led to the loss of America. Sir George Colebrooke (1729-1809) held two lucrative government contracts, one for remitting money to the British forces in the American colonies and the other for victualling the troops there.

Given at Our Court at Windsor Castle, 2 January 1826. 5 pp. 12 x 8 inches, tied by blue ribbon, Royal wafer seal affixed. In superb condition. Light horizontal folds. King George IV (reigned 1820-1830). Sir Charles Stuart (1779-1845), diplomat, who was of great service to the Duke of Wellington in the Peninsular War, had a second term as Envoy Extraordinary and Minister Plenipotentiary to Portugal and Brazil in 1825-26. The King appoints Stuart and Chamberlain as “Our undoubted Commissioners, Procurators and Plenipotentiaries”. Stuart was already Envoy to Brazil for King John VI of Portugal and has signed the Treaty recognising the independence of Brazil on 19 August 1825. George Canning (1770-1827), Prime Minister from April 1827, signs as Secretary of State for Foreign Affairs.

Our Court at St. James’s, 16 May 1782. Large size vellum commission 12 x 16 inches, in superb clean condition, folds, wafer seal affixed. King George III (reigned 1760-1820). This fine commission bears the rare Prime Ministerial signature of William Petty-FitzMaurice, 1st Marquess of Lansdowne (1737 –1805), known as the Earl of Shelburne between 1761 and 1784. He was Home Secretary in 1782 and then Prime Minister 1782–1783 during the final months of the American War of Independence. The 96th Regiment of Foot (British Musketeers) was an infantry regiment in the British Army from 8 April 1780 to 1784. It was one of several regiments raised in consequence of the American Revolutionary War. The Colonel-Commandant of the regiment was General Richard Whyte. After serving for some time in Ireland the regiment was posted to the Channel Isles, where it was disbanded in 1784. Richard Whyte came to command the 24th Regiment of Foot from 1793 to 1807. Our Court at St. James’s, 5 February 1784. Vellum. 13 x 9 inches, folds, Royal wafer seal affixed, in good condition. King George III (reigned 1760-1820). This regiment was formed in 1755 as The Artillery Company of Ireland. The name was changed in 1760 to The Royal Regiment of Irish Artillery. The Regiment served in Canada in 1777 with Major General John Burgoyne, taking part in the American War of Independence. In addition, some Royal Irish Artillery gunners were shipped directly to New York under Brigadier-General James Pattison. The subject of this Commission, Joseph Walker, commanded the Regiment in 1800 and rose to the rank of Lieutenant-General. The soldiers were recruited all over Ireland and were trained in Dublin CastleIn 1801, following the Act of Union and the formation of the United Kingdom, the Royal Irish Artillery was absorbed as an integral part of the Royal Artillery and therefore ceased to exist.
