Undated. 2¼ x 3½ inches, black edges, remains of small hinges, in good condition. Louis Gallait (1810 – 1887), Belgian painter. Among his greater works may be named The Last Honors paid to Counts Egmont and Horn by the Corporations of the Town of Brussels, now at Tournai; The Death of Egmont, in the Berlin gallery; the Coronation of Baudouin, Emperor of Constantinople, painted for Versailles; The Temptation of St Anthony, in the palace at Brussels; The Siege of Antioch, Art and Liberty, Portrait of M. B. Dumortier and The Plague at Tournay, all in the Brussels gallery. A Gipsy Woman and her Children was painted in 1852. He also served as the director and president of the Académie Royale des Beaux-Arts.

A good one page example, 7 x 4½ inches. “Also, if it really does not inconvenience, come in ‘dress’ though I am not quite sure that the lady of whom I spoke will be able to come.” Sir Francis Galton (1822-1911), scientist and explorer (North and South Africa), cousin of Charles Darwin, founder of the study of eugenics. Galton had a prolific intellect, and produced over 340 papers and books throughout his lifetime. He also created the statistical concept of correlation and widely promoted regression toward the mean. He was the first to apply statistical methods to the study of human differences and inheritance of intelligence, and introduced the use of questionnaires and surveys for collecting data on human communities, which he needed for genealogical and biographical works and for his anthropometric studies. 15 August 1808. 1 page 13 x 8 inches, in good condition. James Gambier (1756-1833), 1st Baron Gambier, Admiral of the Fleet (1830) was born in the Bahamas. He fought with distinction under Lord Howe in the Battle off Ushant in 1794. He was Governor of Newfoundland, 1802-1804. He commanded the British fleet at Copenhagen in 1807. At the Battle of Aix Roads in 1809 he disregarded the signals of Dundonald, but was acquitted by a court martial. He retained command of the Channel Fleet until 1811. Gambier was a founding benefactor of Kenyon College in the United States, so the town that was founded with it, Gambier, Ohio is named after him. Mount Gambier, South Australia, the extinct volcano and the later city, and Gambier Island in British Columbia are also named after him.

Given on board the Blake at Sea, 18 July 1809. 1 page 12½ x 8 inches, folds, in good condition. Uncommon. Alan Hyde Gardner, KCB, 2nd Baron Gardner (1770 – 1815) was the son of Admiral Alan Gardner, 1st Baron Gardner, and followed his father into the Royal Navy. In 1796 he was captain of the frigate HMS Heroine, and in 1805 of the 74 gun HMS Hero - in the latter he was present at the action off Ferrol in 1805 and led the vanguard at the Battle of Cape Finisterre later that year.

In 1843, Queen Victoria appointed Garrard to the position of Crown Jewellers, leading to the production of numerous pieces of silverware and jewellery for the Royal Family, as well as the upkeep of the Crown Jewels. In 1852, Garrard were given the responsibility of re-cutting the famous Koh-i-Noor diamond into a brilliant. “The far famed Diamond has lately been placed in my hands by Her Majesty for the purpose of being recut & polished, for which purpose I have erected a Steam Engine and all proper Machinery on these premises. 10 Harley Street, 18 February 1876. 2 pp. 6 x 4 inches, fine. Sir Alfred Baring Garrod (1819-1907), physician. In 1848, Garrod had discovered an abnormal increase of uric acid in the blood of patients with gout, and was the first to propose lithium as a remedy for the disorder. He recommended lithium as a treatment for mental illness, and hypothesized that gout could be a cause of mood disorders such as mania and depression. He is also credited for coining the term "rheumatoid arthritis". In the year of this letter Garrod published the 3rd edition of his Treatise on Gout and Rheumatic Gout (rheumatoid arthritis).
