Springfield: King Richardson, 1899. Subscription publication (frontis, 636, index). A large, sophisticated how-to farmer’s guide to everything from hog husbandry to blackberry culture. Various additional b&w engravings. In brown cloth with black lettering and decoration. Edges rubbed, quite a clean tight copy.

Description:

Toronto: George Morang, 1899. First edition (pp. viii, 561, index). Large octavo (22.5 cm) in maroon publisher’s cloth, gilt titles and decorations, t.e.g. Top and bottom spine edges, tips abraded. The first Governor of Upper Canada, John Graves Simcoe, divided the province into nineteen counties, but by 1798 the first Parliament of Upper Canada had passed a bill ‘to ascertain and establish the boundary lines of the different townships of the province’ and another ‘forming eight districts, twenty-three counties and 158 townships’. All of these appeared in Smith’s map of the province at the end of the 18th century, showing its organization based on the township form of government (or ‘towns’ as they are still known) familiar to early settlers from New England. These many townships, of course, needed names, as did the counties, and as you might expect, very little imagination was expended on the nomenclature (except possibly where certain native names were adapted). Colonists always… Read more

Description:

London: T. Cadell and W. Davies, 1808. Third edition, in two volumes (xxviii, 221; viii, 195, adverts). Illustrated with nearly forty aquatints by Alkin after pen and ink sketches by Gilpin. Not a matched set: Volume I (23cm) in contemporary half morocco over marbled paper, gilt decoration to spine; Volume II (23.5cm) in new brown cloth over complimentary marbled paper. Both bear the stamp of the Boston Public Library on the title page and in the margins of the aquatints. The text and plates are, however, especially clean and bright throughout the two volumes. The contents are useful and attractive sources for investigators of the aesthetic of the picturesque who will discover, for example, that many of Gilpin’s drawings and the aquatints which issued from them were, shall we say, generic representations of actual scenes. One would have been hard pressed to identify them from Gilpin’s portrayals of them.  Two useful, if unmatched, volumes.
