Description:
This book is in fairly good condition. There is some wear on the front, back, edges, and spine of the cover boards, as well as spots on the outside back cover board. There is minimal bumping and fraying on the cover boards. The pages are yellowing and tanning, with some vertical fraying and warping, but the pages are clear of markings. A few of the pages are dog-eared and edges torn. "The Forsyte Saga was the title originally destined for that part of it which is called 'The Man of Propery; and to adopt it for the collected chronicles of the Forsyte family has indulged the Forsytean tenacity that is in all of us. The word Saga might be objected to on the ground that it connotes the heroic and that there is little of heroism in these pages. But it is used with a suitable irony; and, after all, this long tale, though it may deal with folk in frock coats, furbelows, and a gilt-edged period, is not devoid of the essential heat of conflict. Discounting for the gigantic stature and blood-thirstiness of… Read More

Description:
This book is is very good condition. The previous owners name is written inside the front board and stamped on the front end page. But other than this and a missing dust jacket it is near perfect.Franklin Pierce was one of the least known, least liked, and least successful presidents in American history. In this new study of his administration, historian Larry Gara makes no attempt to revive Pierce's reputation. Instead he provides a clear analysis of Pierce's shortcomings as well as his few successes.Franklin Pierce's administration (1853-1857) spanned a turbulent period in the life of the nation: North-South polarization reached new extremes due, in part, to Pierce's failure to understand the depth of Free Soil sentiment in the North; the Kansas-Nebraska Act and its aftermath made civil war likely, if not inevitable; and Pierce's apology for southern actions served only to widen the rift. The term "Bleeding Kansas" came to symbolize the failures of Pierce's administration.Pierce's few achievements… Read More

Description:
This book is in very good condition There is little to no wear on the front, back, spine and edges of the cover boards. The original owner's name is affixed to the inside of the front cover board. The pages are clear of any markings. "There are two ways of writing a short book on a vast subject. One is the potted survey, where everyone appears in the index but very little is added about them in the text. The other is a more impressionistic approach. It is the way of a photographer, choosing certain significant images to suggest a broader scene. And it is the way best suited to the text of an illustrated book, highlighting certain moments at the price of others." - Preface from The Christians

This book is in very good condition. There is some wear on the front, back, edges, and spine of the cover boards. There is essentially no bumping or fraying on the cover boards, although there is some wear on the dust jacket. The pages are beginning to yellow but there are no markings on the pages. "Convent Life no longer suited Sister Mary John. Born Elizabeth Harrison in Philadelphia, she had converted to the Catholic faith and entered the Ursuline order at the age of eighteen in 1824. By all accounts, Sister Mary John was a gifted teacher and musician. Now in this sweltering summer of 1834 at the order's convent school in Charlestown, Massachusetts, she walked out. The oppressive heat, teaching fourteen forty-five minute lessons a day, conducting music classes, and attending to administrative duties as the Mother Assistant became overwhelming. She needed some time off...." - Chapter One from America Aflame: How the Civil War Created a Nation
