First edition, first printing with code"(1)" on page 300. Tight binding, internally clean and bright. Old ownership signature to the front pastedown, along with a few other pencil markings.. Some edge wear to spine, boards, and tips. The front and rear boards have white spots. Textblock edges have tanned.

Folding facsimile plate in Greek and errata page. Charles Hering from Göttingen/Germany, was called "the artistic successor to Roger Payne, the doyen of English bookbinders". He worked for Lord Spencer and the statesman Thomas Grenville. The wealthy and famous West End clientele such as Lord Byron frequented his shop at 34 St. Martin's Street.

DJ has been repaired with tape along the edges, primarily on inside of DJ but also in one location on front of DJ and one location to outside back of DJ. DJ is somewhat browned. Internally, the pages are very clean. Very scarce with dust jacket.

Light, scattered foxing. A beautiful binding. Maud Muller is a poem about a beautiful maid named Maud Muller. One day, while harvesting hay, she meets a judge from the local town. Each is smitten with the other. The judge thinks that he would like to be a local farmer married to Maud, while she thinks that she would like to be the wealthy judge's wife.
Neither voices these thoughts, however, and both the judge and the maiden move on. The judge marries a woman of wealth whose love for him is based on his riches. Maud Muller marries a young uneducated farmer. Throughout the rest of their lives, each remembers the day of their meeting and remorsefully reflects on what might have been.
