New Geneva, Pennsylvania: Unpublished, 1828. April 7, 1828 stampless letter (ALS) from Gallatin to Columbus O'Donnell, a Baltimore businessman who was married to the sister of Gallatin's daughter-in-law Josephine. Gallatin had recently retired from more than a quarter century in public life as U. S. Secretary of the Treasury and diplomat. The letter notes that he had recently returned to his home in New Geneva, Pennsylvania and discovered that personal goods he was shipping to Baltimore needed attention at the other end of the trip. He requests that O'Donnell undertake the task and closes the letter warmly, sending his respects to O'Donnell's wife.. SIGNED. Original. Single Sheet. Very Good. 7 1/2 inches by 12 Inches. The photo was taken while he was still an astronaut candidate. Gardner flew on 2 shuttle missions: STS-35, STS-27. He later became Director of the U.S. and Russian Shuttle-Mir Program. SIGNED, without inscription, "Guy Gardner". Provenance: from the collection of Lee Saegesser, Chief Archivist from 1967 until 1997 in the Washington, DC NASA Headquarters History Office. Originally written as the author's PhD dissertation, the book "reports and analyzes related events and reactions in Virginia from the time of the Supreme Court decison [Brown v. Board of Education] in 1954 to the enactment by the state's General Assembly of massive resistance legislation in September of 1956. A review slip and a publicity photograph of the author are laid in. The book is clean and tight, with a tiny dent on the top edge of the rear board. Bremen, Germany: A. D. Geisler, 1862. Original lithographed folding map. The image is 13 1/4 inches by 19 1/2 inches on a sheet that measures 18 inches by 22 1/4 inches. This map is similar to (perhaps inspired by) Panorama of the seat of war : bird's eye view of Virginia, Maryland, Delaware, and the District of Columbia published by John Bachmann in Baltimore in 1861. Both are semi-topographical birds-eye views of the region, but there are differences, not the least of which is that only this Geisler map is oriented with North being at the bottom of the map. My best guess is that Geisler produced the map for sale to people in Germany who had a keen interest in the American Civil War. The map does not show troop movements or anything else military; it appears to be intended to give the Germans a picture of the territory where the war was taking place. Unpublished, 1991. On November 15, 1991 famed "beat" poet Allen Ginsberg performed/lectured in the Virginia Commonwealth University Business Building Auditorium in Richmond, Virginia. Offered here is an original admission ticket (number 360) for that lecture. Ginsberg signed (without inscription) and dated the front of the ticket, and boldly included "AH" within a circle. Beginning sometime around 1978, he frequently accompanied his autograph with that symbol. Although he occasionally gave brief, often enigmatic explanations of the symbol, the most complete explanation of AH that I have seen is written by Ginsberg on the verso of this ticket--and he initialed the explanation! I previously sold a poster for the VCU event that had been signed by Ginsberg for the holder of this ticket.
