He was recruited whilst still a student at Cambridge, along with fellow traitors, Donald Maclean, Guy Burgess and Anthony Blunt. Since the defection of Burgess and Donald MacLean in 1951 MI5, the British Security Service, had been searching for the mysterious 'Third Man'. In 1963 testimony from a Soviet defector clinched the case against Philby. A fellow SIS officer went to Beirut to persuade Philby to confess. Instead, he fled to Moscow.
