Berlin, Germany: Julius Springer, 1939. First Edition. During the mid 1930's, Hahn and Strassmann had worked with Lise Meitner in an attempt to use chemical processes to isolate and identify the transuranium elements that they believed to have been created through neutron bombardment of uranium. When the war broke out, Meitner fled Germany to take up residence in Sweden. In 1938 Hahn and Strassmann continued these experiments. Late in the year they completed an experiment aimed at isolating radium, but instead found only barium, a medium-weight element. The presence of barium rather than radium meant that uranium must have been split into two nearly equal fragments. They sent in their announcement to Naturwissenschaften in late December and notified Lise Meitner at the same time. xviii, 862 pp. 4to. The magazine was not published all twelve months of the year, no publication in May, June & October. The month of August is missing its plate, the plate and title page for the month of December is missing.

Hartzog, Jr. (1920-2008) was the seventh Director of the National Park Service and served from 1964-1972 until he was dismissed under pressure from President Richard Nixon over a dispute over Hartzog's cancellation of a special use permit of a friend of Nixon's. Outspoken, Hartzog led the NPS through a great deal of expansion, including many urban parks. xvii, 284 pp. 8vo. Very light scuffing, clean within.

Stockholm, WI: Midnight Paper Sales, 1998. First Edition. Hard Cover. Fine. Copy #143 of 200, enclosed in a slipcase, and signed by Hautman and Schanilec. Hand-set text in Garamond with Ratdolt titling, hand-printed on Zerkall mould-made paper and hand-bound it into boards. Seven multiple-color wood engravings printed from maple blocks.

Gallipolis, OH: Hank Snow Fan Club, 1961-1966. First Edition. Wraps. Very Good. Hank Snow (1914-1999) was an early and enduring star of the Grand Ole Opry. Best known for his hits, "I'm Moving On," " I Don't Hurt Anymore," and "I've Been Everywhere." Snow overcame a childhood of poverty and abuse to become one of the leading stars of country music in America, becoming a member of the Grand Ole Opry in 1950, and elected to the Country Music Hall of Fame in 1979. Fan club publications were the primary way for stars to maintain a direct connection to fans; with the clubs run by fans, it required little work for stars beyond providing additional copy, tour dates, and occasional photographs. Volume is ex-library with brown patterned paper boards, lighter brown cloth spines and corner tips; gold embossed titling to spine. Wear to edges of cover boards where cloth has worn to reveal board beneath, hinge cloth beginning to split at front and rear cover but still tight to boards. Library stamps within, including stamps on title page of each volume, very clean with card pocket remaining on the rear pastedown of each volume. All text in German.

Hinge of front board starting at top edge but still tight. All foredges marbled. Light foxing to endpapers, clean within.

John Herschel (1792-1871) invented this form of photographic reproduction as a way to capture data that was beyond the limits of human vision. Although known in the scientific community, cyanotype photography did not come into commercial use until after Herschel's death when it was capitalized on commercially by the creation of the "blueprint" for architectural plans.
