Description:
Oxford and London: Printed for R. Clements, 1753. Very good in period polished calf, hinges reinforced, wear to edges, Rugby School and prior owner bookplates to front pastedown.. Hall boldly and incorrectly claimed, when the book was first issued in 1597, that he was the first English satirist (writing in the Latin tradition), "I first adventure, follow me who list; And be the second English satirist." At the time, the Archbishop of Canterbury directed that Virgidemiarum be burned for licentiousness, but later relented. Alexander Pope declared the Virgidemiarum to be the "best poetry and truest satire in the English language." (Dibdin, Bibliomania, pg. 506, 1811). 12mo. ix, [7], 13-108 pp. ESTC T140513.

Description:
[n.p., England], 1917. Very good internally but vellum heavily soiled and toned, boards bowed, contents clean with some light finger-soiling.. Attractive manuscript children's book filled with watercolor illustrations. A whimsical story in verse about a carefree itinerant fellow and his dog set in the early twentieth century wandering the towns of southern England before finding and then losing untold riches in Canterbury - and learning that time and leisure are more valuable than money. This book appears to be unpublished as we trace no printed version of any variation of this title by this author or illustrators. Oblong 4to. 7 leaves. Clearly a work of love as it is bound in full vellum with gilt lettering and marbled endpapers.

Description:
London: Charles Ollier, 1846. Very good in green cloth binding, with some bumping to corners and heavier at the spine, university bookplate and a few remnants of card pocket. Still very presentable and quite uncommon in commerce.. First edition (but see below). Chapter IV of John Carter's Binding Variants in English Publishing 1820-1900 (London: Constable & Co Ltd, 1932) revolves around binding variants of this book. Carter notes several different binding variants and calls it "the prize exhibit in my collection of [binding variant] puzzles." Id. at 62. However, the copy here appears to be anomalous - it has both the 1846 Ollier title page and the 1846 Ollier advertisements - but the binding is not any of Carter's four variants. Rather it appears to be the Hex5 "pansy" cloth introduced in the mid-1860s. Krupp, Bookcloth in England and America, 1823-50, The Papers of the Bibliographical Society of America, Vol. 100, No. 1 (March 2006), pg. 59. Like Carter suggests, the binding variants of… Read More

1907. First trade edition. Good plus in publisher's orange cloth with gilt, wear to spine and edges, over opened, some foxing throughout though mainly to preliminaries, tipped-in plates clean.. [Dulac, Edmund, ill.].. First trade edition of "Dulac's most important book [which] was an overnight sensation that unequivocally established Dulac's reputation." This copy is a fantastic association copy which is inscribed to Algernon Charles Swinburne by his sister, Isabel Swinburne, for Christmas 1907, and with Swinburne's bookplate. Swinburne was a notable poet associated with the Pre-Raphaelites, and a subject of a painting, housemate, and a close friend of Rossetti. Large 8vo. xvi, 133pp. [3] + 50 tipped-in color plates, including frontispiece, mounted on gray stock with captioned tissue guards. Hughey 16b. All of the plates, with the exception of the frontispiece, are bound at the end. Without the extremely scarce dust jacket.

Boston: D. Lothrop and Company, 1882. First thus. Very good in publisher's green cloth boards with blind and gilt stamping, with some wear to spine and slight cocking.. This copy is from the Fern Glen Series and carries a different title, but its contents almost exactly mirror "A Children's Year" which was first published in London in 1847. OCLC 10109609 reflects a New York printing also in 1847. However, the Fern Glen Series was largely produced in the 1870s and the instant binding and catalog mentioning an 1882 release largely confirms that to be the case, perhaps utilizing old sheets with a new title and binding to reinvigorate a weak seller. 12mo. 8, 9-257pp., + 15 page catalogue. Not in Woodring. NCBEL III, 1286 for the English title.
