Both volumes have a neat prior owner bookplate on front pastedown. Lacking the slipcase. Bound in red cloth over boards with gilt-stamped spine and upper board titles, deckle edges. A solid, handsome set.. Color and black and white illustrations, fold-out map. Haig-Brown was an Englishman who spent most of his adult life on British Columbia's Campbell River. This fine Derrydale production is well illustrated with line drawings, plates from photographs, color plates of fish by E. B. S. Logier, etc. This copy has the foldout map facing page 3 in volume one, which is apparently absent from most of the edition. The text is well written and includes bibliographic references at the ends of chapters. <br /> <br /> Ref. HAND H44; SIEGEL et al #156.

Both volumes are bound in brown cloth over bevelled-edge boards with gilt-stamped spines and upper boards. First issue copy has minor edge bumps and light rubs, with gilt remaining bright. Second issue copy has minor edge wear, prior owner bookplate, and some darkening to gilt. Both books have sound hinges and endpapers.. First state of the first edition, with correct issue points on spine, title page, and page 136, together with a second state copy. The pair are housed together in a custom half morocco slipcase.

Annapolis: Treasury Office, 1818. Single sheet, approximately 9 1/4" x 11 3/4. Fine, with some light age-toning and three horizontal folds. Ink bleed-through from endorsement on back side of folded document.. Statement of expenses related to the construction and first few years of the Maryland Penitentiary in Baltimore. Issued by Benjamin Harwood, Treasurer of the Western Shore of Maryland, and dated December 16th, 1818. Over $160,000 in expenditures are listed. The penitentiary opened in 1812. <br /> <br /> Interestingly, the amounts are listed in pounds, shillings, and pence through 1812, then in dollars and cents beginning in 1813. <br /> <br /> Harwood's office was in the Old Treasury Building which still stands near the Maryland State House and is the oldest public building in Annapolis. Benjamin Harwood's family owned the Hammond-Harwood House in Annapolis, one of the town's many surviving 18th century architectural treasures.

These boys' stories revolve around a club of boys whose home base is a river bank on the Ohio, with the lead character being the "seckatary" who records their activities. This particular adventure is set in Cuba. Charmingly illustrated by Carll B. Williams. Bound in ribbed-textured cloth over boards with spine and upper board titled in gilt, upper board also has vignette of Seckatary Hawkins with an open book and inkwell in black. A few minor extremity rubs, a bit of darkening along spine and top edge of upper board, otherwise clean and bright with sound hinges. Excellent condition. . No dust jacket.

Washington: Mathew Brady, 1863. Mounted on a 2" x 4" card. Clear image with a few insignificant brown spots, slight rubs to edges of card. Signature is clear and bold.. Black and white photograph. Original albumen photographic profile vignette of a seated General Hooker, facing left. Imprint of Brady Studio, Washington, in bottom margin. Inscribed on back of the mount "Joseph Hooker / Maj. Genl." General Hooker's aggressive fighting in 1862 led Lincoln to place him in command of the Army of the Potomac in January of 1863. He was defeated by Lee at Chancellorsville, and replaced by General Meade just days before the Battle of Gettysburg. Hooker's legacy is somewhat tarnished by his reputation for drinking, gambling, and womanizing.

This is an endearing letter from the aged social activist, suffragist, and poet just days before her 89th birthday. Julia Ward Howe is perhaps best known as the writer of "The Battle Hymn of the Republic," but was also a prominent abolitionist and women's rights advocate. The letter is addressed "Dear Martha, and in it Mrs. Howe expresses her anxiety about upcoming speaking engagements. She notes her fatigue, her concerns about transportation to the events, and, poignantly, that "I feel very helpless--can't live up to my reputation. Fear that I was never measured for it, and that that is why it does not fit."
