Description:
¶ First edition (only edition) of Harwood's first paper on her chief specialty, which was the variable magnitude of asteroids and of Eros in particular. This work excited "such unusual interest" at the time that it dominated the August meetings of the American Astronomical Society, and pushed other papers off the program. (Cannon, in The Nantucket Maria Mitchell Association Fourteenth annual report 1916, page 17.) Harwood was named director of the Maria Mitchell Observatory two months later, in October 1915. Scarce on the market. — — Caption title. Collation: Quarto (300 x 248 mm, 11¾ x 9¾ inches): Four leaves, paginated [161] 162-66 [167-68 blank]; complete as issued, with the genuine blank leaf at end. Two tables, three figures. Binding: Unbound as issued. Condition: Fine. (Series: Annals of the astronomical observatory of Harvard College [1855- ], volume 76, no. 8.)

Thus the Widener copy, for example, was received on 7 November 1914. -- -- Caption title. Collation: Quarto (300 x 248 mm, 11¾ x 9¾ inches): Twenty-four leaves, paginated [19]-42, complete as issued. Illustration: Four tables, two halftone plates (spectrograms). Binding: Sewed, unbound, as issued. Condition: About fine. Description:
First edition (only edition) of this important bibliography, giving not just the authors and titles of all 212 individual volumes and parts 1855-1913, but also descriptions of their contents and some hints at their importance. It also identifies the authors of a number of works published anonymously. (Series: Annals of the Astronomical Observatory of Harvard College [1855- ], volume 75, part 2.) The present copy is lightly annotated in pencil on pages 210-14, perhaps at Harvard, perhaps about 1920, updating the checklist slightly, and noting that this Contents itself is now "Out of print".

Leipzig: M. W. Kaufmann, 1907 *** ONLY EDITION; including seven fables in German, adapted from the Talmudic masekhtot Berakhot and Sanhedrin, midrashim Rabbah and Yalkut, and sefer Sha'are teshuvah (13th century CE).
