Berlin: Wiking Verlag, 1936. Two consecutive issues of this English language German magazine published from 1931-1943 by Wiking Verlag, an SS-affiliated publisher. Although sympathetic to National Socialism, the magazine's aim was to provide "unbiased information on many topics of mutual interest to Germany and other nations, [to] help further international, cultural and peaceful progress." Articles celebrate German culture, industry, sports, nature and general life. Featured content for issue 3 includes "In Praise of Wood-Engraving" by Alfred Zacharias, with many terrific examples; "German Technique and the Development of Safety in Aviation" by Wolfgang von Gronau; "The Saga of Selma Lagerlöf" by W. London: Headley Brothers, 1915. First edition. Twelvemo. Light blue wrappers printed in black & red; 128, [1] pp. The author calls for women the world over to organize and add their voices to the campaign against militarism and aggression. A Very Good copy with wrapper edges and spine browned, corners bumped. Just over a dozen copies in OCLC; scarce in the trade.

New York: The Inter-Union Institute for Labor and Democracy, 1953. Three items from the Inter-Union Institute, a labor think tank founded in 1941 by J. B. S. Hardman (b. Jacob Benjamin Salutsky, 1882-1968) "to explore the relationship between intellectuals and the labor movement." Included is the inaugural issue of the organization's magazine, Labor and Nation, which was issued in two parts. Part two is an Inter-Union Institute Study Report on "Royalties, Taxes and Assessments: Industry-Paid and Union-Administered for Labor Welfare Benefits." Also included is the publication, "Men and Climate in the Eisenhower Era" (whole number 34 of Labor and Nation, and part of the Labor and National Timely Papers), a collection of articles that emerged from a conference held by the Inter-Union Institute in New York City in December 1952, on the subject: "The 1952 Election and What's Next." [Greenlawn, NY?]: [Published by the author], 1950. A somewhat bizarre political/economic treatise from New York Supreme Court stenographer Ned Reuben Harman (1890-1962). Reuben inexplicably writes as his alter ego Mano Mars, an inhabitant of Mars "who sees all things objectively as to Earth, [and who] has succeeded in applying mathematics to Good and Evil..." (p. 2). Reuben/Mars introduces (and copyrights) the "Moralmeter," a measure of the morality of all things, including government and economics, which are the pamphlet's focus. His work appears partially based on Frederick Bastiat's 19th century work, Harmonies of Political Economy, which is referenced extensively throughout. A strange work applying metaphysics to political economy and economics. Stapled wrappers (5 ½" x 8"), 52 p., tables. Label ghost to the top of the front wrapper, slight rippling along the bottom edge from possible moisture exposure. Not in OCLC.

Budapest: Hungarian Trade Union Council, 1950. Photo-illustrated Communist propaganda on the happy and productive lives of Hungarian working people since 1945 "when the liberating Soviet Army drove the fascists from Hungarian territory." Includes sections on factory life, child care, social security, health resorts, and holidays. Stapled oblong wrappers (5 ¾" x 9"), [30] p., heavily illustrated with photographs. A Fine copy. Only three copies in OCLC.

London: The Fuller Engineering Company, 1920. 24.5 x 18.5 cm; 24 pp.; illus. Saddle-stapled booklet, staples oxidized and bleeding a little. Some general rubbing with a few marks of soiling to rear cover, but overall a Very Good copy. This article was originally printed in "The Textile Recorder" and seems to be re-printed here for The Fuller Engineering Company's newsletter. With graphs, diagrams and illustrations.

Tokyo: The Shiunso Press, 1946. An account of the diplomatic efforts of Tetsuma Hashimoto (1890-1990), a political commentator and head of the ‘rightist' Shiunso organization, to secure goodwill between the United States and Japan leading up to Pearl Harbor. Hashimoto's five "lectures" provide insight into the "China Incident", his visits to the U.S. between 1940-41 as ‘Mr. Y', his arrest by the Japanese government on suspicion of undermining Japanese foreign policy, and his post-prison peace efforts. An uncommon title. Wrappers printed in orange & black, iii, 130 p. A near fine copy.

New York: R. H. Russell, 1901. Limited ed. 12mo. (18.75 cm); brown paper over vellum with gilt spine; pages printed in green and black; 57 pp.; illustrated frontis by John La Farge. A poem by the American poet, writer, racehorse owner/breeder, socialite and philanthropist, Helen Julia Jay Whitney. Paper chipping at corners, general rubbing; owner's name to ffep, some minor foxing. A VG copy lacking the scarce dust jacket.

Philadelphia: At Friends' Book Store, 1886. First edition. Twelvemo. Brown, ruled cloth stamped in gilt to front board; pale blue endpapers; viii, [1], 10-258 pp. Christopher Healy (1773-1851) was a Quaker minister from Rhode Island who traveled extensively around the U.S. visiting Quaker meetinghouses and fellow Friends. A Very Good+ or better copy with a touch of mottling to cloth.

Prague: AIZ, 1934. The notorious "Mimikry" issue of the illustrated German magazine Arbeiter-Illustrierte Zeitung featuring a cover photomontage of Goebbels and Hitler by John Heartfield. The caption reads, "When all attempts to convey National Socialist ideas to the working class failed, Goebbels had one last desperate idea: he persuaded the "Führer" to wear a Karl Marx beard in the future when addressing workers." Founded in 1924 by German Communist Willi Münzenberg, AIZ published news and events of interest to workers, and became famous for its worker-submitted photographs. Heartfield became affiliated with the magazine in 1930 and contributed over 200 photomontages over the magazine's final eight years. It was forced to relocate from Germany to Prague in 1933 where it ceased in 1938. Newspaper format printed on coated stock, 242-256 p., illustrated. Wear along fold, small split at spine fold.

London: Elek Books, 1964. First UK edition. 8vo.; grey cloth boards stamped in silver to spine, 227 pp., dust jacket. Memoirs of the noted journalist, screenwriter and Zionist, Ben Hecht, as he begins his career in seedy 1920s Chicago. Some smudging to half-title, content redacted on title page by publisher, in a bright, unclipped dust jacket, which is rubbed and slightly edgeworn with a couple of small closed tears at the crown and top edge.

Los Angeles: New Age Press, 1943. Second edition. A Rosicrucian theory on the "new race forming in America[,] the embyronic [sic] beginning of the next Great Race, the sixth Root Race, which will succeed the present Aryan or fifth Root Race when its full cycle of seven sub-races shall have run its course" (p. 3). This new race's physical, physiological, mental and spiritual characteristics are then explored. Theodore Heline was married to Corinne Dunklee Heline (1882-1975) who'd been a student of Rosicrucian Fellowship founder Max Heindel. They founded the New Age Press in Los Angeles and were affiliated with the New Age Bible and Philosophy Center. Stapled cream wrappers printed in red & blue, 29 p. Faint pencil mark to the front cover. Only five copies in OCLC.

Pittsburgh: KNOW, Inc, 1971. A list of tips for "students, women, workers, blacks and others now organizing in our country to fight oppression [who] sooner or later get into closed-door showdowns with The Man." The author dedicates it to the Board of Directors of the American Psychological Association "without whose opposition it might never have been written." Four corner-stapled 11" x 8 ½" sheets, 3 p. of text, crudely drawn cover illustration. Six copies in WorldCat.

New York: Gallery: Gertrude Stein, 1964. An 17" x 24" offset printed poster for Sam Goodman's controversial NO-Sculptures [Shit Show] held at the Gertrude Stein Gallery from May 12-May 30, 1964. The show featured 21 piles of sculpted excrement described by fellow artist Boris Lurie as "an ultimate gesture of aggressive manly despair plunged into our consciousness with the exactitude of the matador in the final kill." Goodman, along with Boris Lurie and Stanley Fisher founded the March Group (around the March Gallery on East Tenth St.) in 1959, which then gave birth to the NO!art Movement. He and Lurie collaborated on a number of provocative shows titled Vulgar, Involvement and Doom before Goodman died prematurely of cancer in 1967. A scarce surviving poster. One copy located in OCLC at the Stichting Stedelijk Museum Amsterdam.

A scarce document that includes the background, beliefs and purpose, Constitution, rules and regulations of the Worlds Comrades, a Tribe, a freethought utopian group, that according to the front wrapper was founded by a William Hetrick. The first half of the document contains a lengthy message from Hetrick on the purpose : "I proclaim the truth as I have found it, by a life time of calm and fearless thought, and earnestly endeavor to arouse the dormant energies of human beings to a realization of their only refuge from sorrow, which is in the power and vastness of their understanding and the universal freedom of their thoughts, without which no man can have true liberty among his fellow beings or hold dominion over circumstances, or guide his course as he drifts toward the unknown realms of the future on the might current of condition.
