Stapled wraps. One inch chip at top left of spine, a few chips to spine and smaller chip at front edge and a few small nicks to wrap. Interior clean and bright, binding tight. [Pulp] Hammett, Dashiell. The Maltese Falcon. New York: Pocket Books, 1945. First edition, sixth printing. Number 268 in the Pocket Book collection. Illustrated soft covers with dustjacket capturing Brigid O'Shaughnessy disrobing while a shadow of a man appears in the foreground. The tagline reads "Sam Spade searched each article of the girl's clothing...Color flushed her face...". In true Hammett fashion, the novel centers upon true crime, obsession, and mystery, as portrayed by protagonist, Sam Spade. Dashiell Hammett is often hailed as "the dean of the 'hard-boiled' school of detective fiction" and the mystery genre. After being a detective for years, he implemented many of his experiences within his novels. Dustjacket is minorly chipped on lower part of spine and has two 1/2 inch tears on top spine. Pages are clean and bright, in very good condition.

[African American] Archive of 9 items on the life of young African American woman who attended Hampton University, in Hampton, Virginia. The archive consist of 7 photographs and two postcard letters. Photographs range in size from 1.75" x 1" to 10" x 8" inches, with most around 4" x 2" inches. Original black and white silver gelatin prints. This archive documents educational achievement among young African American women in the 1940s. Hampton University is one of the nation's most prominent HBCUs. One photo indicates that one of these women (Myree Lott) graduated in 1951 from Edwards High School in Gonzales, Texas, just outside San Antonio. Hampton University postcard postmarked September 1944. The letter on verso reads: I am glad you have still got work. Things began to look a little blue here." Seemed to be signed "Wilson to Bertha." This event took place in the colony of German South West Africa, which they held from 1884 to 1915, and could possibly be a reprisal from the Germans against a local rebellion. Rebellions against the German occupiers began as early as 1894 with the Hottentot Uprising, and the conflict reached its crescendo in the Herero-Namaqua Genocide of 1904, when German forces participated in a chilling campaign of ethnic extermination and imprisonment of indigenous peoples in brutal concentration camps. [African American] "Harlem: An Episode of Life in New York's Black Belt" Apollo Theater Original Playbill. New York: Edward A. Blatt, 1929. 24 pages total. Measures 8" x 5.5". Vibrant blue pictorial wrappers. Harlem opened on February 20th, 1929 and closed on May 1st of the same year, playing a total of 93 showings. The play, although an attempt to examine life in Harlem, was anything but a success. Even so, it placed William Thurman and William Jourdan Rapp, co-producers/writers of the play in debt.It was loosely inspired by Wallace Thurman's short story, "Cordelia the Crude", and followed the lives of a migrant family who has moved to New York in hopes of a brighter future. Yet it met rave reviews from White critics, and a mixed response from the Black audience, most notably for the play's often negative depictions of Black life in Harlem. Photos measure between 1" x 1" - 3.5" x 5. The majority, if not all, of the bikes are Harley Davidsons. Many photos are of either bikers on their motorcycles or prideful shots of the bikes alone. Shown are different models, some with custom classic flame paint jobs. Men and women bikers are seen throughout atop their motorcycles, driving down open highways, gathering together at meet ups and camping out at pit stops for longer trips. [Harley Davidson Motorcycle culture] Photo archive of 34 color photographs from the 1980s of a group of California bikers, possibly the Modesto Harley Davidson club chapter. Photos measure around 3.5" x 5". Three photos are datestamped between 1986 and 87, the rest undated by from appear to be from around the same time period. Bikes appear in almost every photo; most, if not all, are Harley Davidsons. A variety of styles are ridden, from cruisers to touring bikes to modded choppers. Many of the bikes are equipped for the long haul, with saddlebags and supplies loaded on. A few photos show the bikers cruising through the main strip of Gustine, California, a small Central Valley agricultural town near Modesto. Image depicts a Native American mother and her two daughters sitting on the ground, a horse standing in the background. Photographer Harmon Marble is most known for his extensive photography of Navajo, Hopi, Sioux, and Menominee. Captured during his tenure working for the Indian Service, Marble's pictures were sometimes poorly composed and printed. However, this lack of artistic sense led to a candid and honest portraiture of the indigenous population. This original photograph is sepia-toned and in very good condition.

[John Brown ] Stereoview of John Brown's Fort at Harpers Ferry, Virginia. Brady, Matthew, photographer. N.p., ca 1870s. 6.25" x 3.5". Featured are three men standing outside of the one-story brick guardhouse with words "John Brown's Fort" painted over arched doorways. The building became famous as John Brown's refuge during his 1859 raid on Harpers Ferry. Expecting that thousands of slaves would join him, Brown stayed too long in Harpers Ferry. Upon hearing that Brown had taken hostages in the Armory, companies of armed militia came to encircle the building. Brown's group blocked the few windows, used the engines and hose cart to block the heavy doors, and reinforced the doors with rope, making small holes on the walls and through them trading sporadic gunfire with the surrounding militia. Between 2 and 3 there was "a great deal of firing", but Brown was inevitably captured. In her book, Harrington describes the rights afforded to men and the weights which have held back women from reaching their full potential: "The men worked with a will and had freed themselves from everything that impeded their movements, but the women had their two writs connected by a cord, which hampered them at every turn..." Released in the foundational days of the English women's suffrage movement, Harrington presents the struggle for women's voting rights through poetic metaphors. Double-matted and framed with a large color portrait of Harrison on stage as a member of the Beatles to an overall size of 12.5 x 20.5. In fine condition, with a bank stamp over first name of signature, a couple other stamps and notations, and two punch holes to top edge.

Archive of 2 Hartford Female Seminary Catalogue and Circulars. 1876 and 1877. Measure 7 x 4.5 inches. 12 pages. Original soft wrappers, brown and green respectively. Catalogues include list of trustees, faculty, calendar, fees and students. The Hartford Female Seminary was established in 1823 by Catharine E. Beecher and based in the belief that the possibility of true gender equality was contingent on the quality of female education. Light shelfwear to both. Cover text worn on 1877 catalogue with light stain to front wrapper does not affect text. Overall good condition.
