Friendship album with handwritten poems and letters in many hands to a young woman commemorating their time as schoolmates, c. 1831. Green marbled end papers. 76 pages. 36 entries handwritten from 1831-1899. Album belonging to Elizabeth N. Patterson a young lady student with entries from several friends, including this letter titled "To a School Mate": "How swiftly rolls the wheels of time. Four years have now elapsed since we parted from the school where we were taught from our childhood up; and I can say from my heart that they… Read More

Description:
Photo of German soldiers in present day Namibia next to the gallows where a number of emaciated African men have been hung. Circa 1896. Black and white albumen photograph. 6 x 4 inches. Caption reads: "German So. W Africa Hanging Party. 312 Negroes Hanged." This event took place in the colony of German South West Africa, which they held from 1884 to 1915, and could possibly be a reprisal from the Germans against a local rebellion. Rebellions against the German occupiers began as early as 1894 with the Hottentot Uprising, and the conflict reached its crescendo in the Herero-Namaqua Genocide of 1904, when German forces participated in a chilling campaign of ethnic extermination and imprisonment of indigenous peoples in brutal concentration camps. This atrocity is considered the first genocide of the 20th century and has a number of parallels with later Nazi crimes in WWII, namely the persecution of particular ethnic groups, forcing populations into concentration camps, gruesome medical experiments being… Read More

Description:
[African American] "Harlem: An Episode of Life in New York's Black Belt" Apollo Theater Original Playbill. New York: Edward A. Blatt, 1929. 24 pages total. Measures 8" x 5.5". Vibrant blue pictorial wrappers. Harlem opened on February 20th, 1929 and closed on May 1st of the same year, playing a total of 93 showings. The play, although an attempt to examine life in Harlem, was anything but a success. Even so, it placed William Thurman and William Jourdan Rapp, co-producers/writers of the play in debt.It was loosely inspired by Wallace Thurman's short story, "Cordelia the Crude", and followed the lives of a migrant family who has moved to New York in hopes of a brighter future. Yet it met rave reviews from White critics, and a mixed response from the Black audience, most notably for the play's often negative depictions of Black life in Harlem. The playbill is filled with 20's advertisements, including a section for TIME magazine. The playbill details actor's names, roles, the crew, and the stage set-up.… Read More

Photos measure between 1" x 1" - 3.5" x 5. The majority, if not all, of the bikes are Harley Davidsons. Many photos are of either bikers on their motorcycles or prideful shots of the bikes alone. Men and women bikers are seen throughout atop their motorcycles, driving down open highways, gathering together at meet ups and camping out at pit stops for longer trips. One photo shows two long haired men from the 70s inspecting their bike, owner's writing en verso reads "First day out of the garage getting ready to start it for the first time after 1 1/2 years of building it pi[e]ce by pi[e]ce." Many of the bikes are equipped for the long haul, with saddlebags and supplies loaded on. A few photos show the bikers cruising through the main strip of Gustine, California, a small Central Valley agricultural town near Modesto. This is a mixed crowd, with many men and women making up the chapter. While in Gustine, the crew rumbles down the main drag, flying their Harley Davidson club flag, the American flag, and even the Confederate flag. Image depicts a Native American mother and her two daughters sitting on the ground, a horse standing in the background. Photographer Harmon Marble is most known for his extensive photography of Navajo, Hopi, Sioux, and Menominee. [John Brown ] Stereoview of John Brown's Fort at Harpers Ferry, Virginia. Brady, Matthew, photographer. N.p., ca 1870s. 6.25" x 3.5". Featured are three men standing outside of the one-story brick guardhouse with words "John Brown's Fort" painted over arched doorways. The building became famous as John Brown's refuge during his 1859 raid on Harpers Ferry. Expecting that thousands of slaves would join him, Brown stayed too long in Harpers Ferry. Upon hearing that Brown had taken hostages in the Armory, companies of armed militia came to encircle the building. Brown's group blocked the few windows, used the engines and hose cart to block the heavy doors, and reinforced the doors with rope, making small holes on the walls and through them trading sporadic gunfire with the surrounding militia. Between 2 and 3 there was "a great deal of firing", but Brown was inevitably captured. The raid on Harper's Ferry did not ignite spontaneous slave revolts throughout the South as Brown had envisioned, but his trial… Read More

Augusta Harrington. Women's Suffrage: A Vision and An Allegory. Westminster: The London Society for Women's Suffrage, 8 pages. Pamphlet with Original paper wrappers. At the time that this description is being written, no copies are recorded in American institutions. OCLC search results are at best an estimate and can vary over time. Very rare. In her book, Harrington describes the rights afforded to men and the weights which have held back women from reaching their full potential: "The men worked with a will and had freed themselves from everything that impeded their movements, but the women had their two writs connected by a cord, which hampered them at every turn..." Released in the foundational days of the English women's suffrage movement, Harrington presents the struggle for women's voting rights through poetic metaphors. The London Society for Women's Suffrage was one of the first suffrage organizations in the UK which published and distributed texts advocating for equal voting rights. Minor… Read More
