Ernst Justus Haeberlin (1847-1925) formed an extraordinary collection of the early cast coinages of the Roman Republic, and Aes Grave is the result of a life's work in numismatics. A San Francisco newspaper published the very morning the San Francisco Mint opened its doors for business. While the opening is not discussed, the paper includes a report on page 2 regarding the deposits of gold and silver made at the Philadelphia Mint in February 1854, and the resulting coinage, noting specifically the gold that came from California.
