Description:
Minneapolis: Coffee House Press, 2017. First printing. Fine in fine dust jacket and slipcase.. Signed special first edition of this manic character study of a college wrestler in his senior year - issued as part of the Powell's Books INDIESPENSABLE Series. For more than ten years and over seventy installments, Powell's Books (Portland) has been issuing their semi-monthly INDIESPENSABLE series, a subscription-only selection of specially-produced, (typically) limited edition volumes from many of the most prominent names in literature (Claire Messud, George Saunders, Michael Chabon, Annie Proulx, Donna Tartt, J.M. Coetzee, Jeffrey Eugenides, Jonathan Franzen, Siri Hustvedt) and publishing (McSweeney's, Graywolf, Algonquin). Installments commonly include a signed and slipcased recent release, as well as one of more promotional titles (usually ARCs or like, but sometimes, advance excerpts). 9'' x 6''. Original tan boards. Original unclipped ($25.00) color pictorial dust jacket. 288 pages. With original…

Description:
London: Jonathan Cape, 2003. First printing. Fine in a near fine jacket.. True first edition of acclaimed mystery, the story of an autistic boy who uncovers uncomfortable family secrets when he sets out to solve the murder of the neighbor's dog - inscribed by Haddon to the daughter of his agent, Gillon Aitken. This mystery was longlisted for the Booker Prize and received a number of other major awards and critical nods; in 2012 it was adapted for the stage. The book has received criticism for reliance on stereotypes of autistic people to construct the main character of Christopher; in later editions, the jacket copy no longer describes Christopher as autistic, though the term is explicitly used in this first edition. Sherlock Holmes fans will recognize the book's title as a quote from the famous detective in "The Adventure of Silver Blaze," in which Holmes focuses on a key piece of evidence during his investigate: "the curious incident of the dog in the night-time." A beautiful copy of this modern…

Description:
n.p.: n.p., 1956. Near fine overall.. Four printer's color proof sheets for Berta and Elmer Hader's THE RUNAWAYS, an engaging example of how a picture book comes together for publication. These four proofs represent the cover and first gatherings of THE RUNAWAYS. The lively illustrations reveal a sense of the plot: a bulldozer forces animals (including opossums, skunks, raccoons, and a variety of birds) to flee their forest home and seek shelter on a farm. Many of the Haders' books in this period featured conservationist themes and were often based in the scenery around their little stone house on Willow Hill, which was just outside New York City. These proofs demonstrate an important part of the editing process: the review and reorganization of illustrations. These textless sheets place an emphasis on the illustrations, allowing the Haders to give feedback on their color and print quality. Comparing the changes across the four sheets is a thought-provoking bibliographical exercise, allowing a peek…

Description:
[New York]: n.p., 1938. Very good minus.. Original large painted image of a circus monkey riding a pony, depicted exactly as these characters appear in the Haders' book CRICKET, but in a different pose not used in the final book. CRICKET follows the life of the titular character beginning with his growing fame in the circus, as depicted here. The final book includes illustrations in black and white and in color, and on a much smaller scale than this large color study. The image in the book that most resembles it, a black-and-white tailpiece on page 48, is a fraction of the size, and depicts the two characters in the act of running rather than standing. This ephemeral study is an unusual survival documenting the kind of preparation that goes into an illustrated book project, showing how such preliminary labor is eventually translated into the final product. One rolled sheet of brown poster paper, painted in color by the Haders. Significant wear, closed tears and chipping to edges of sheet, with some…

Description:
n.p.: n.p., 1949. Very good plus.. Original photo proofs of Berta and Elmer Hader's 1949 LITTLE APPALOOSA, the story of a boy and his spotted pony - evidence of the pre-production process for a mid-century picture book. These photo proofs, likely printed from offset negatives, focus on the art: all of them lack narrative text, but some include notes and small changes made in the negatives. LITTLE APPALOOSA is one of the Haders' scarcer titles, so this evidence of its production process is a wonderful survival. 8.5'' x 11''; 13.75'' x 10.5'' (2 proofs); 14'' x 19.5'' (8 proofs). 11 sheets of black-and-white illustrated photo proofs in three sizes. Stored rolled. With some light edgewear, a few sheets with small spots of soil and toning to versos; occasional spots of soil to black portions. Bright overall.

Description:
[New York]: n.p., 1948. Very good plus overall.. Collection of eight large original charcoal and chalk drawings featuring scenes from THE BIG SNOW, presented as part of a live promotional event for the 1948 NEW YORK TIMES Boys' and Girls' Book Fair. Publication is not the final step in the making of a children's book. After hitting the shelves, the book must now be "made" in the minds of buyers, so promotion becomes the biggest focus. These large chalk and charcoal drawings are a compelling example of book marketing, in this case, Berta and Elmer Hader's THE BIG SNOW. Created during a "chalk talk" - an event in which the illustrator redraws images from their picture book while telling the story in front of an audience - the images instill a dynamism into the Haders' classic story about animals who experience a deep winter snow. This format of promotion seems built for the Haders. Before beginning his career with Berta, PUBLISHER'S WEEKLY notes that Elmer "took a successful vaudeville stunt called…

Description:
New York: Macmillan, 1948. Fine in very good jacket.. Inscribed second printing of the first edition of this Caldecott Award winner - with an original watercolor and inscribed to Marian Young, a prominent librarian and member of the Caldecott Award selection committee. The Haders's original watercolor spans the half title and facing page and depicts a snow-capped cottage with trees, skilfullly and seamlessly connected to the printed bird illustration on the half title, effectively building upon their own book. THE BIG SNOW, winner of the 1949 Caldecott Medal, shows the various preparations for winter made by woodland animals: a lovingly observed reflection of the artists' real-world concern for nature conservation and animal rights. A lovely association copy whose recipient, librarian Marian C. Young, was chief of the Children's Department at the Detroit Public Library and chair of the 1956 Newbery-Caldecott Award Committee; Young also served as the 1950-1951 president of the Michigan Library…

Description:
New York: Sheldon & Company, 1865. Very good.. Rare two-volume set of Hadley's Victorian retellings of the two testaments' greatest hits, for the young and young at heart. Surprisingly scarce early US edition of Hadley's adaptations of stories from the Old and New Testaments, improved and fortified with added piety for the edification of young children. Received with some displeasure in its own day for its presumption; a contemporary review in Arthur's Illustrated Home Magazine disapproves of the author's rearrangements: "We do not think it good to paraphrase the Bible, or to attempt to clothe its histories in other language." On the other hand, if Hadley's version is not an improvement on the poetic language of the King James version, it is at least substantially shorter. Two volumes, 6.75'' x 4.5'' each. Original plum cloth, gilt-decorated spines. Yellow endpapers. Each volume illustrated with 6 engravings. 238 and 234, [6] pages respectively. Spines and upper edges heavily sunned. Worming to…
