Description:
Frankfurt, 1925. Hardcover. Good. Calligraphic manuscript on paper: 10 pages, including an original watercolor by the artist, and bound by her. Written on Flinsche Paper (Frankfurt). Large "modernist" watercolor illustration on first leaf (evidence of deep pencil scratch in outer margin), on the recto a manuscript dedication (dated June 1925) being a six-line poem by Nietzsche entitled "Ecce Homo" (the inscription is signed by "Stefan"). Bound in original beige linen over boards (worn and slightly stained). Overall in good antiquarian condition. An accomplished calligraphic manuscript, presenting a poignant passage from Knut Hamsun's "Pan: from the papers of Lieutenant Thomas Glahn" (Chapter XXIII). The manuscript was written and bound by a young Frankfurt artist who appears to have faded into almost complete obscurity; we believe that the artist was Elisabeth Louise Satori, born in Oberrad (Frankfurt) in 1907. She would have been 18 years of age at the time the present manuscript was written. The… Read more

Description:
London: Printed by G. Woodfall, 1818. First Edition. Hardcover. Very good. 4to. [iv], 188 pp. Original drab boards (a little worn, expertly rebacked). Edges uncut and partially unopened. Ex-libris stamps in blind from the Theological Institute of Connecticut (now known as the Hartford Seminary). NB: in 1976 a collection of more than 200,000 books from the Hartford Seminary Library were sold to Emory University, including this one --> deaccessioned from Pitts Theology Library. Some minor spotting, but overall in very good condition, the paper quite crisp. First Edition. Highly interesting catalogue of the legal manuscripts collected by Francis Hargrave (1741-1821). In 1813 Hargrave's collection of 499 manuscripts, together with his library of books, was purchased for £8,000 for the British nation by a vote of the House of Commons. The catalogue describes the manuscript portion of the Hargrave collection. Hargrave was the most prominent of the five advocates who appeared on behalf of James… Read more

Description:
Tokyo: Yamatoya Kihee, 1872. Very good. 2 vols. 8vo. Original wrappers, stitched as issued in the Japanese style (a little stained; early ownership stamps on first pages; light stains to upper margins and colophons). Complete copy in good condition. A remarkable Japanese abridged edition of Joseph Harris's "Harris on the Pig: Breeding, Rearing, Management, and Improvement" (New York, 1870), with a preface by Genkan Sumida. There are six charming illustrations of pigs and wild boar on five leaves, here rendered in fairly crude woodcuts. The utility of Harris's text is attested by the fact that this abridgement appeared in Japanese very soon after it was published in New York. There are chapters on the care of pigs, the species of pigs, how to make them fatter and more healthy, how to make a pig's shelter, preparation of food, etc. Highly curious.

London: Victoria and Albert Museum, 1961. Hardcover. Very good. 8vo. 33 pp. With 79 illustrations on 72 pp. Original green cloth. One of the few illustrated guides to the historic and artistic bindings in the V&A, and by far the most informative (apart from Weale's pioneering work of 1898 which was illustrated only with drawings). Harthan's long introduction on the development of bookbinding style is still very useful.

Description:
Unbound. Very good. Undated (Late 19th-century). In a large 4to. binder. The condition is clean and quite fresh. A collection of curious Victorian "Cross Writing" examples. "Cross Writing" was usually reserved for love letters or close family members; it was initially a technique to maximize the amount of text that could be fitted onto one side of a sheet of paper: letters often either didn't have envelopes (and thus addressed and sealed on the blank side of the sheet) or were subject to a higher postage cost according to the number of sheets. "Cross Writing" evolving into a way to conceal the content of a letter from a casual observer, an early type of visual encoding. In the early 19th century, the postal system was financially demanding for some people, as was the scarcity of paper. Tom Standage writes in the Victorian Internet [1998]: "In the nineteenth century, letter writing was the only way to communicate with those living at a distance. However, prior to 1840, the post was expensive. Postal… Read more

Cambridge: University Press, 1931. First Edition. Very good. Large 4to. Engraved frontispiece ("La belle ecriture demande un esprit gai"), xl, 226 pp. 81 plates. Original light-brown quarter cloth over decorated ("marbled") cloth boards (very small abrasion at tail of spine). Top edges gilt, others untrimmed. Dust-wrapper soiled and defective, inside lined with brown paper. Text, plates, and binding are in splendid state; a lovely copy. First edition, limited to 300 copies signed by the author, of the essential reference work on the history of English writing manuals -- still unsurpassed. Ours is copy 146 and is preserved in very fresh, unmarked condition. This original edition is a fine specimen of Cambridge bookmaking and is much preferred over the ugly facsimile reprint (Olms, 1962) which disgraced the beauty of the 23 portraits of the writing-masters and the 58 plates of their copy-books and trade-cards (some of the plates present more than one example). The value of the present volume lies not… Read more

Description:
Paris: Chez Serviere, 1795. Very good. Complete set of 5 vols. 8vo. Contemporary French marbled calf, smooth spines gilt, red morocco labels (bindings refurbished, vol. 1 rebacked with original spine laid down). Collation: [2], viii, 416; 462; 506; 446; 487 pp. This copy does not contain the portrait which is cited on the title-page but was clearly never bound herein (not all copies contain it), and thus is priced accordingly. This five-volume set is of particular interest owing to the fact that the publisher's printed spine labels were not discarded by the binder, but were inexplicably retained, and were bound in at the end of vol. 2. While such survivals do occur in one- or two-volume sets, they are rarely found as here. Political and Social Radicalism anticipating the French Revolution. Philadelphia: Samuel F. Bradford. Vol 1 printed by H. Maxwell; vol 2 printed by Robert Carr, 1804. Very Good. 8vo in 4's. 2 vols. 219 x 143 mm. Pagination: I: vi pp., 1 f.. blank, 313, [7] pp. II: [4], 466, [3] pp. Collation: vol. I: [A]4, B-3G4 3H8 (-3H8, a blank). Vol 2: [A]2, B-3N4, 3O4 (-3O4, a blank). Both volumes lack frontispieces, clearly never bound in to this copy as there are no indications of extraction of any kind, and the bindings were clearly expensive to produce. Bound in early American tree calf, joints with unimportant wear, very slightly bumped, spine compartments bordered on top and bottom with three different ornamental rolls in gilt, spine titled in gilt on red morocco spine label in second compartment, fourth compartment has volume number titled in gilt, other compartments contain victory ornament in gilt with weapons and vines, ornamental roll in gilt along edges, "Stroud" printed paper label at foot of spine, marbled endleaves. Description:
Harrisburg, PA: s.n., 1840. Stated Third Edition (but see below). Very good. 12mo, 84 pp. Contemporary patterned paper over boards, contemporary sheep spine (binding worn but perfectly sound; damp-staining at the foot of the gutter for the first several gatherings; textblock a bit foxed as is true in all copies). Completely unsophisticated. The most famous folk magic and remedy book written in America, often referred to as the "Pow-Wow" book, first published in Reading in 1820, and with scattered Pennsylvania editions following throughout the 1820s and 1830s; it is still in print after 200 years. Regarding the present copy we are naturally drawn to the unsophisticated contemporary "Pennsylvania Dutch" binding: the pattered decorative paper which covers the pastepaper boards strongly resembles linen fabric; was it employed by the binder as a cheap alternative? Hohman's book, with its charms, recipes, terminology of illnesses, remedies for human and animal ailments, and magic formulae, continues to… Read more
