Original calf, spine expertly repaired in leather with gold stamped red label on spine The first edition of this interesting work, edited for publication by Daniel Haskell, who surreptitiously inserted some religious maunderings not found in the author's manuscript. Harmon joined the North West Company in 1808 travelled to Lake Winnipeg and the Assinniboine, where he stayed some seven years. His later travels took him to Ft. William, New Caledonia, Ft. Vermillion, Ft. Chipewyan, etc. The map was engraved by Annin & Smith, Boston, and shows the northern United States and Canada to the Pacific Ocean in good detail. Wagner-Camp 17. Field 656. With the ownership signature of Antonius Laurentius, dated 1690, in the upper margin of the title page, not affecting the text. Some light wear to the extremities of the binding. Title page and imprimatur leaf somewhat dust soiled, some light damp staining to a few leaves, mostly marginal. Later antique style 3/4 calf over marbled boards, guilt-ruled spine compartments, 4 raised spine bands, red speckled edges. Harris (1647-1732) was physician to William and Mary. His book served for nearly a century as a standard work on paediatrics. He anticipated the modern treatment of tetany by using calcium salts in infantile convulsions. Harris advocated the theory that all diseases of infancy were caused by acidosos, and recommended treatment by some form of calcium carbonate-an anticipation of the modern treatment of tetany.
