German artist Hans Haacke's depiction of the unequal exchange rate when West Germany's currency replaced the East German mark on July 1, 1990. East Germans received 1 Deutsche mark for each of their Ostmarks, but only up to a small limit. For the rest of their savings and debts, East Germans received 1 Deutsche mark for every 2 Ostmarks, thus devaluing much of their savings.
In this piece, Haacke (b. 1936) shows a photograph of West German Chancellor Helmut Kohl, framed by the colors of the German flag. But his eyes are replaced with a 1 Deutsche mark coin on the left and a 2 Ostmark coin on the right.

The author, Alfred Harding, was the editor of Equity Magazine for more than 30 years. As The New York Times noted in his 1969 obituary: "In his book, Mr. Harding chronicles the one-month strike that virtually shut down Broadway in 1919, from which Equity dates its effectiveness as a bargaining agent for actors." Near Fine in a Very Good, price-clipped dust jacket. The jacket has some soiling and several gouges on the front panel. (They haven't penetrated the panel.) Small tears on both the front and back panels with a bit of sunning. Michael Harrington (1928-1989) was a leading democratic socialist, best known for his book "The Other America" about poverty in the U.S. In the present volume he dissects American cultural and intellectual life.

An important compilation of papers and proceedings at the historic first Writers' Congress of 1935. Authors included Malcolm Cowley, John Dos Passos, Louis Aragon, Waldo Frank, Granville Hicks, and Langston Hughes, among many others. Much of the discussion dealt with proletarian literature; the role of the writer in the Soviet Union, and the fight against Fascism. These were all left-wing writers, many of them associated with the Communist Party; the party's publishing arm issued this edition.
Given the close association of the congress with the Communist Party, it's not surprising to find CPUSA chief Earl Browder turning up in the proceedings. And Alexander Trachtenberg, who ran the party's International Publishers, gave an interesting talk on publishing revolutionary writers. Scarce in commerce.

A collection of poems by the British poet Lee Harwood (1939-2015), who wrote these pieces between 1967 and 1972. The poems are interspersed with black-and-white postcard images of ships. New York: New York Labor News Company, 1937. 5th Printing. 12mo (7 1/4 x 5 inches; 185 x 127 mm), 69, [3] pages, in stapled wrappers (soft cover). Pamphlet attacking labor leader John Lewis as "a servant of plutocratic capitalism." This pamphlet was written by Eric Hass, a Socialist Labor Party stalwart who went on to be the SLP's candidate for president in four elections. "John L. Lewis Exposed!" must have been very popular in 1937. It was first issued in June and went through four more printings through October. This is the 5th printing. CONDITION: Soiling to wrappers and fore edge, corners bumped, rubbing to spine, but internally clean, bright, and unmarked. Very Good or better.

Eric Hass decries the spread of anti-Semitism in the United States and argues that socialism is the answer to defeating it. Hass was a Socialist Labor Party stalwart who went on to be the SLP's candidate for president in four elections. This 1944 edition is scarce in commerce. CONDITION: Light vertical crease throughout, some soiling to wrappers, tears to two leaves, not affecting any text. Otherwise, Very Good.

[London?]: [Revolutionary Communist Party], [1966]. First Edition Thus. A scarce pamphlet published on the 10th anniversary of the Hungarian revolution. It includes material published in a 1956-57 edition plus additional material. The author, Gerry Healy, strongly denounces the Soviet invasion of Hungary and takes Western leftists to task for not supporting the workers' uprising. This edition was published as a "Newsletter Pamphlet" and includes considerable material on the uprising, an article on workers' councils (reprinted from the Newsletter of Nov. 12, 1966), and a useful chronology of events in Hungary and Eastern Europe. The Newsletter was a publication of Britain's Revolutionary Communist Party. Copies of the original publication are available in the antiquarian book trade, but this edition -- with additional material -- is much more scarce. The lead article, "The Approaching Election," is sympathetic toward the Socialists but acknowledges that a Republican victory in 1948 is "almost certain." (Wrong). There are also several articles by the mystic Corinne Heline on New Age Bible and movie interpretations and on Joseph Haydn and Sergei Rachmaninoff, who were born under the sign of Aries. SCARCE. CONDITION: Some soiling and edge wear, a few pencil markings, staples rusted. A Very Good copy.

Small Quarto (9 1/2 x 8 1/2 inches. 240 x 215 mm), 98 [2] pages, in heavy illustrated wrappers (soft cover).SIGNED by artist Larry Rivers on the upper wrapper, the first issue of this art and literary magazine that was devoted to Abstract Expressionism and New York School poetry. Rivers (1923-2002) contributed the cover art, designed the magazine, and wrote an article about collaborating with poets Frank O'Hara and Kenneth Koch. Other contributors include Koch, David Levy, Robert Rauschenberg, Kenneth Burke, Saul Steinberg, Marshall McLuhan, Willem de Kooning, Saul Bellow, and Peter Yates, among others. SCARCE SIGNED. A good introduction to late-20th-century British art, featuring such artists as Auerbach, Ayres, Bacon, Bellany, Cockrill, Freud, Hodgkin, Kitaj, Kossoff, Oulton, Rego, and others.

INSCRIBED on the front end paper: "For Walter Lippmann / from / Granville Hicks." An interesting association here, as Walter Lippmann and John Reed were classmates at Harvard (1910) and embraced many of the same left-wing causes. In addition, Lippmann, a founder of The New Republic, published Reed's reporting on the Mexican Revolution. But their friendship broke down over American involvement in World War I, which Reed strongly opposed and Lippmann favored. In an exchange of letters in 1916, they criticized one another in the most bitter of terms, with Reed accusing Lippmann of abandoning his radical beliefs and Lippmann saying Reed was a dilettante and fake radical. Napoli [Naples]: Edizioni Morra, 1977. First Edition, First Printing. INSCRIBED by Dick Higgins on the front end paper: "For Harry & Marion--as ever. Dick Higgins." Dated 11.V.1978. Scarce publication by Fluxus artist Dick Higgins (1938-1998) featuring epitaphs that he painted on terra cotta jars. The collection was shown at Studio Morra in Naples in September 1977. He says in the introduction that he composed most of the epitaphs himself, but acknowledges "a few trope folk or literary sources (eg., Erik Satie)." There's a mixture of the funny and cruel among the epitaphs. For example: "I wanted quiet but this is a little too quiet." Or this: "If she had lived on would anyone have noticed?" Almost all text is in both English and Italian, although Higgins uses other languages here and there. The frontispiece features a black-and-white photo of a jar with an epitaph.
