First edition of this scarce recounting of the famed Icelandic Saga of Grettir the Strong, considered one of the finest in Scandinavian Sagas, and the Icelandic version of the Beowulf Legend set in the 10th century. This work tells of desperate feats, fighting beserkers, and with the spirit of Glam, as well as an excellent account of Icelandic folkways and culture. These are early illustrations by Michael Zeno Diemer (1867-1939) who studied at the Academy in Munich under Gabriel von Gackl and Alexander von Liezen-Mayer, and was especially well-knwon for his watercolours of the Alps.

Twenty-six silver gelatin photographs, sized 8 x 10 in., all preserved in contemporary matte boards (minor toning to fore-edges of matting, slight bumping, dustsoiling), still a VG set. This collection of photographs document the people and surroundings in post-World War II Indonesia, during a trip by the recently discharged Captain with his wife Elizabeth through southeast Asia. The images encompass such sites as a crossroads sign complete with fearsome idols, and distances to Mengwi, Denpasar, Etangi, and other places; a family standing in front of a temple with a stone carving of elephant in the backdrop; a Malaysian Sun Bear standing on his hind legs begging; several ornate mosques, and very large Hindu temple under reconstruction; boats traveling down a canal; marketplace scenes, and some with native porters pushing huge loads of filled sacks on wheeled carts.
