Description:
2 Vols. set : Vol. 1) The Deluxe limited edition published by Batsford in 1942. One of only 100 copies printed on handmade paper and Signed by both the Author and Rex Whistler to the limitation page. The BOOK is in Very Good++ or better condition with the publisher s original quarter dark green morocco, spine lettered in gilt, mid-green cloth sides, top edge green. The spine has only a hint of rubbing and is not toned or faded. Light rubbing to the lower cover edges. Internally clean. 22 illustrations by Rex Whistler, 2 colour-printed and a number full-page. The book is protected in a loose glassine archival cover. An extremely handsome copy of a title which, when it does appear on the market often appears with a very rubbed and faded spine. Whistler was to sadly die in service 2yrs later, so I am presuming, this was one of the very last book commissions he undertook. Vol. 2) The First UK Trade edition published by Batsford. The BOOK is in near Fine condition in a Very Good++ or better complete… Read more

The First UK Printing published by Heffer and Sons in 1919. The BOOK is in near Fine condition. Clean and bright in publisher's original grey paper covered boards with a neat gift inscription to the front end paper. Some very light spotting to the text-block but internally clean. The WRAPPER is complete and is in Very Good+ or better condition with some losses at the spine ends not involving any lettering. A few closed tears with minimal losses at the corners. The wrapper presents well in the removable Brodart archival protector. A very attractive copy of a fragile work. A collection of Cambridge based ghost and 'horror' stories compared favourably at the time to the work of such worthies as M.R. James. B/W illustrations throughout by E. Joyce Shillington Scales. Some fine chilling tales including 'The Necromancer' (evil stalks through Cambridge in the guise of a cat) and the beautifully titled 'The Burden of Dead Books' which warns us never to let our greed for wealth coincide with annual gatherings… Read more
